How would I build a mini waterfall, rock garden, and plants for my desk? I have seen desk waterfalls for sale, and of course plans. But I'm thinking almost a mini-tank with a few water plants, with a waterfall that falls into it, with rocks around it. Wouldn't that be fantastic to have on your desk?! Any ideas on where to buy such a thing? Or to buy something that I could easily modify? Or how to build one? Thanks!

Can you also tell me if these plants are suitable for a south-facing yard in north Texas (Dallas area)? Plants are popping up in my rock garden and I want them gone, Help? I had it laid 2 years ago and until now there have been a dandilion here a clump of grass there at most. This spring I got all sorts of green stuff coming up especially under the over hang of my neighbor's tree. There is a smal flower bed right near the house but the rest should be nice yellow pebbles and 6 flagstone squares. You can barely see two of the flagstons now for the weeds and grass. I usually pull up what ever stray green pops up but this year I can't come close to keeping up with it. What can I use to kill this stuff without haveing to take up all the stones and the garden sheeting beneath it? there used to be a lawn beneath and I do not care if it is all killed, except for my flowers . What can I use to kill off the greenery. Im on a fixed income so something do it yourself works best.

Can having glass rocks amongst the garden plants give the plants lead poisoning? Can having glass rocks from craft store amongst my garden plants give the plants lead poisoning? my bf's ex had glass rocks everywhere in the garden. the plants, some very hearty-type plants are dying. I've dug up old roots from the palm for example, and found these damn colored rocks surrounding the roots up to 7 inches down! these are the rocks you get at a craft store for misc. - about $3-5 dollars a bag. they probably looked great in the beginning, but many of the color has faded away and now it seems 8 years later, the plants are too. There's alot of cobalt blue color in there... they seem to have kept their color the longest. thoughts on this?
Do I have to use cactus soil if I want to make a rock garden? I want to make a small rock garden with these plants: Anemone Pulsatilla Draba Rigida Campanula Rotundifolia Should I use cactus potting soil? Or should I make layers or different soil? I read somewhere I should put sand on top and regular potting mix in the bottom, with gravel on the very bottom to further improve drainage. But what do they mean with "sand"? Do they just mean cactus potting soil? If it's real sand, can you tell me where I can buy it, because I am sure it must be some kind of fertilized sand. Do they sell it at the Home Depot or Lowes? Most importantly, my zone is Z8a, in the Dallas area. Thanks!

Does this count as a rock garden? Would it be a rock garden if I take a large rock(s) and put soil in the large holes and then plant the special flowers? What I want to do is have something unique in my yard that is fun and not a huge project. And how would I plant the flowers in the rock?
What is a good plant or flower for a rock garden where it will get hot? Hi- I have a small rock garden that is in the strip between the sidewalk and curb by my front yard. The rock is all with reddish tones. There is no lawn left in that area, just gravel. But I want to be able to plant some plants or flowers in that area. I prefer perennials. I'd need something that could handle all the heat the rock is going to soak up. I live in Nebraska, so I don't think that a cactus will work due to the cold. I know that salvia would be an option, but I'm not fond of that particular plant. Any other ideas? Can you plant aster in those conditions? I don't have a huge amount of space.
How do you keep foreign plants from growing in a moss garden? I have moss growing on our rock walkway and we have planted grass close by and seems to want to keep coming up through the moss. I don't think it's hurting it, but it's taking away from the look we are trying to achieve. Any way to keep it from growing? And any way to remove the current plants from the moss without picking out every single plant individually? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Dear readers, I am trying to make a japanese rock garden outside of my condominiums front door. there is a space about 8 feet wide and 20 feet long and that is the space I want to put the garden in. I also would appreciate if anybody can tell me some good stores to buy high quality sand, any low water required plants, moss, etc. anything for a rock garden. Please respond, and Thank You.

Are there any shade-loving plants that are resistant to slugs (or that slugs don't like)? I have some hostas in a rock garden, in a very shady spot, that look just terrible, holes all over the leaves, and I know it's from slugs. Anyone have ideas for plants that could do well in a spot like this? Looking for something fairly easy, low to medium maintenance.

Decorative rock-garden? Hello everyone here! :) I'm living in a small room and want to make a decorative rock-garden (alpinarium) in a small glass box (aquarium or terrarium alike). Is it possible? How can I mark or label or write on medium-sized rocks for a rock garden? I have a small corner of my yard that is infested with morning glory weed. I have given up on trying to keep it looking nice as a garden area. My plan now is to sterilize the ground, cover it with heavy duty black plastic and a bark mulch of some sort, and place medium to large sized rocks on it, like you would find in a rock garden. I may even place pots here and there with something colorful in them. Just to make it a little more fun and interesting, I plan to collect these rocks from various places I visit. I would like to keep track of where the rocks are from and I am wondering if anyone has a good idea on how to mark them to do this.? So far I have thought of just printing the names of the towns with waterproof paint, or attaching some kind of a metal plate, or even just labeling plant marker stakes and placing one beside each rock. What unique ideas do you have? Just to be clear, I only want to label the rocks with the name of the town I got the rocks from; I don't want to actually decorate the rocks.

It has large and small rocks and cactus growing everywhere, I would like to redesign the position of the rocks (maybe in clusters) and maybe plant ground covers in between the craves of the rocks, need ideas.
How do I remove white rocks from my soil to start a flower garden? I decided to plant a flower garden and as I began to clear the soil, I realized that someone had previously had a garden there and used white rocks to surround the flowers, so the soil is FULL of white rocks. What is the best way to remove them? Thanks for any help!
Will rocks in my garden bed be harmful to my vegetables ? I planted a few vegetables in a raised bed style, it basically looks like a long mound of dirt raised 4 inches off the ground. It has rained heavily in my area for the past week and i went outside to look at my garden and noticed all these newly exposed rocks everywhere. Dozens and dozens of little pebbles. Im presuming they were exposed by the rain, will this be harmful to my vegetables ? Any sugeestions?
Aside from rocks, and shutting it down, what can I do to make my garden pond safe for birds? I returned home from walking my dog today to carnage in my otherwise peaceful garden pond. There were two "floating" birds, and one shivering while holding on to the pump's electrical cord. Though obviously distraught, I was able to save the one who held on, however, had to bury his mates. That side, I've looked online, and aside from adding a rock and a water plant for any bathers to hold on to (and yes, from closing it down completely) what other suggestionos do you have? As a nature lover, I already feel terrible, so please no sarcasm. Serious answers only please! For now, the pond is drained and off. Before I open it up again for business, I want to do all that I can to avoid a repeat incident. Thank you kindly.
Help with what to plant in new garden? I'm new to the whole gardening thing; I have an area outside I'd like to plant in...it's a raised area next to the house surrounded by rocks. It gets lots of sunlight throughout the day. Any suggestions what to plant there? I want a variety of height and color. Can I go to a garden store and just buy a bunch of flowers?
how to separate rocks from garden soil? i am cleaning out an old planting area where the previous owner had bushes and used red rocks for mulch. I am making it into a nice flower bed but am struggling with an easy way to separate the rocks from the soil (which is quite good). I plan to reuse the rocks, as much as possible, by adding to other areas where they are already in use. any ideas?
My gardening book lists plants to grow on scree and dry walls. Does this mean no soil is required? I have recently had my front garden landscaped, mostly shingle and groups of rocks. Very low maintenance but rather bare (my daughter calls it "Stonehenge"). I am considering ornamental grasses, but would like some colour and cover. I must admit I am not an enthusiast!
Fixing Clay Soil for Vegetable Garden? this soil is so hard, if left untouched for just a few days it will nearly turn to rock. i have new soil on top of this but it is not mixed in well. i already have plants in the garden and cannot take them all out. i think i know what to add but do not know how without removing/ messing with all the plants. tips?
plans for hillside garden stairs? My house is on a hillside lot and there is a steep slope in our yard, with a flat area at the top where we would like to plant a vegetable garden. The soil is clay and rock and seems pretty stable--the house has been there 80 years with apparently no slides. Any ideas where we can find DIY plans for constructing some type of stairway up the hill using rocks, railroad ties or other materials? Thanks.
is it illegal to remove my next door neighbours plants from my garden.? My neighbours are really horrible. They have even told my kids not to play football in our own back garden cos they don,t want the ball going in their garden. We have a single drive then a patch of grass that extends into their front garden (our border is easily seen on our plans). They have gone and planted flowers on our piece of green and put great big rocks. Which we fall over as we get out the car. We are met with abuse and they state its their land. If we remove the plants (we intend to lay some slabs then park our car on it) and rocks and lay them neatly on their lawn can we still be done for criminal damage as we have up rooted the plants thanks
Small garden patch for children. What should we grow? I have a small patch of soil in my garden approximatly 1.5mtrs square. My daughters are aged 7 & 9 years. Any suggestions to what we can grow. The patch is against a fence and a wall on 2 sides. othetr 2 sides are open. Its in my back yard and in a really shaded area. probably on about 2 hours of direct sunlight each day. Thats if its sunny lol. We live in the UK. Do i need lots of compost and how much digging over should be done before planting. and how long can we expect to wait untill things grow. Im very very new to gardening. My daughters have suggested groing veg. Last summer it was filled with rocks and a few pansy plants. We have also tried putting grass seed down but didnt really work. tried to grow sunflowers a few years ago. but because of the lack of sun ( 2 hours a day ) they just didnt seem to grow beyond 12 inches
Why wont my outdoor container garden thrive? I have an outdoor container garden because where we live our back yard is all rocks. There is no dirt to plant in but I still wanted fresh herbs and some veggies. I have tomatoes, garlic, Snap peas, and some herbs. The tomatoes seem to be staying the same. Not growing, nothing. The peas died completely (were vining up the side of the house, I think the house cooked the plants! Im in California) and everything else is just not getting bigger. I water every day, used miracle grow soil. Is there a secret i dont know?
How to start a garden? I have a garden that is new and completely empty. The fences do not have complete coverage, so there's no privacy yet. The ground is just lawn. The thing is, I know loads of beautiful plants. But I would like to know how to get a garden prepared for lots of planting, how should I make borders (with rocks?) and what would be a nice way to cover those fences.
What is the easiest way to dig up dirt for a water garden? I have been digging a hole in my yard for a water garden that I am going to construct, but the soil is rock hard and in-organic and because of the hole's location in between two huge trees there are thousands of roots from small grass roots to huge 6" thick or bigger roots from the trees. I've been using a hoe to loosen the dirt for shoveling and to cut the roots, but it's becoming an extreme physically enduring project. Are there any other low-budget methods to get a hole dug? Remember, I need to dig a hole to match my measurements and designs for a water garden, not just a big hole. Note: A water garden, in my case, is a small man-made pond with fish, aquatic plants, frogs, etc.
Decomposed granite stabilizer ok for plants? I just ripped out my lawn and want to cover it with decomposed granite (and various sized rocks) to make a desert garden. The guy at the sand and stone material place told me to get the DG that has a stabilizer in it so that it doesn't get all over my house and neighborhood. Is this a good idea if you want to plant stuff in it? Will it become too hard for the plants? Anyone with experience regarding stabilized DG? Any help is greatly appreciated.
