Advice on a butterfly and bird garden? I have a raised bed, octagon shaped planterbox. It's maybe 6 inches tall. The diameter (roughly) is 7 feet. I'd like to put in a birdbath and some bird feeders on poles or sheperds hooks. This would all be waist or eye level. I'd like to also do a butterfly garden for the lower level stuff. Any advice on what to plant to attact birds and butterflies and let them coexist? The spot gets morning through mid afternoon full sun. Probably 6 good hours uninterrupted. I live in MN. Thanks!
Best plants/flowers for encouraging bees/butterflies into my garden I'm redoing my garden and would like to leave a part of it wild to encourage bees, butterflies and ladybirds into it but haven't a clue what to plant. Thanks Andrea P.S If you know of any plants that would discourage wasps and next doors cat, that'd be fab too! Lol. I have nothing against cats usually but, there's 3 of them and I have a toddler that likes nothing more than " Helping " with the gardening! Ooo, I love nightscented stock and already have lavender!
What plants to put in an herb garden? I'm starting an herb garden and I'm going to buy the seedlings today, but I'm not sure what I should buy. Need help on butterfly garden? I have a butterfly garden and I have 27 plants attracting butterflies. I need more! The space is big so the plants look like nothing (As in not enough plants to make it look like a garden). I have the basics like milkweed, pasionvine, blanket flower, black eyed susan, firebush, goldenrod, walter's vibernum, dutchman's pipevine, and red sage. I have more but, a lot more. I live in Southwestern Florida (USA). The wweather is always sunny. What other plants can i get that attract butterflies? THANKS!!!!!!
estimate butterfly garden cost? For my gold award, I am redoing and very much improving a butterfly garden at my local park. I was wondering cost-wise, how much do butterfly gardens cost (just the plants alone)? Also, I live in West-Central Florida, if regions change anything. Thanks!
Gardeners: I was given a package of butterfly garden seeds, aka a variety of different...? ...flowers in one package. Does anyone know if these can be planted in large containers rather than directly in the garden. My sunny garden space is limited and the areas I do have available are small. It sounds like these seeds need mostly sun. I've never met a seed I didn't like nor a plant, hence the slight crowding in my garden. Here's hoping I can make patio plants out of them. Thanks in advance.
What are the best plants for attracting butterflies? I want to make a butterfly garden and was wondering what I should plant. I am in zone 5/6 and would like to grow flowers, vines, shrubs, etc. that would attract the lovelies. The area I am looking to grow in is partial shade (some areas almost all shade under a tree). It would be awesome if there was a flowering vine I could grow up the tree. Any ideas would be great! Thanks!
Butterfly Flower Garden AND Weed Problem? In the Spring I'm going to plant a seed mixture of Alcea rosea, Asclepias tuberose, Aster novae-angliae, Clarkia amoena, Cosmos bipinnatus, Delphinium consolida, Digitalis purpurea, Echinacea purpurea, lavatera trimestris, Malope trifida, Mirabilis jalapa, Monarda citriodora, Nicotiana affinis, Petalostemum purpureum, Phlox drummondii, Salvia coccinea, Trifolium incarnatum, Tropaeolum majus and Zinnia elegans. Last Spring/Summer we had a huge weed problem we would spray weed killer and rip out weeds but they would keep coming back. We finally put down Weed Defense Fabric that lets air, water and nutrients through, not weeds. Then put mulch on top to hold down the fabric. I would like to start a butterfly garden and I'm worried if I cut the fabric that the weeds will grow through the openings. If I plant a butterfly garden I can't use a weed killer as it will harm the butterflys. Can anyone help? I live in Connecticut and the weeds I have aren't dandelions. I have no idea what they are called they grow into this stalk (bamboo ish) with large green leaves. They do not die with weed killer you have to pull as many out by the roots as possible.
a butterfly or humming bird garden in zone 7? I am planing on makeing a butterfly, hummingbird and or bee attracting garden. Annuals, perennials it doesnt matter. I live in zone 7. Also what else would I need other than the plants to make them want to visit more?
I want to build a butterfly garden in my front yard, but my husband thinks our dogs will dig it up. Prevention I would love to have a butterfly garden in my front yard, but we have two dogs (3 months & 11 months). My husband thinks it will be a waste of money because he said the dogs will probably dig everything up, or just go plop down in the middle of the plants to cool off in the potting soil & pebbles. I don't want to "not" have a nice yard just because I have dogs, so is there a way to prevent dogs from messing with a garden? Maybe a spray or something you can buy? My grandmother told me if the dogs do not see you digging & planting the plants that they will not mess with them, but if they do see you planting the garden, they will run right to it & start digging or trying to eat the plants. Is this true? Because if it's that easy, I can easily make the dogs stay inside while we plant it lol But that seems a little strange to me, that would actually keep them from digging i up. Anyways, any tips so I can have my garden are appreciated! :-)
How to make a butterfly Garden? What are the plants that I can grow in a butterfly garden to attract butterflies?please give the list of flowering plants to plant in that Garden?

Live butterfly larvae? I just planted a butterfly garden containing milkweed and some other kind of butterfly attracting plant. Can sand be used in place of mulch? The native soil here is sandy, and I'm creating a native plant butterfly garden. The plants I am going to be using grow naturally in sandy habitats (oak scrub). I thought it would look cool for the ground to be sandy like it is in nature. Any ideas on how that would work/look in my garden?

butterfly bush? I planted a butterfly garden. All my plants are doing very well...I have golden dew drops, lantana, milkweed, etc. Well that is except for my butterfly bushes. They are wilting and I water them frequently. One actually lost all of its leaves, but is sending out new shoots. The others seem to wilt in the heat of the day and some of the branches have died. I live in central Florida. The landscaper laid out this garden for me so he must have thought butterfly bushes would grow fine in my area. Any suggestions out there? Thanks in advance.
Butterfly Landscaping? I am looking to landscape my front yard in the spring, I live in New Jersey so basically the North East.... I wanted to do a butterfly garden theme with various plants that would support the butterfly cycle, would this be a nice front yard display? I purchased a small condo and the front has a bay window so I figured do the butterfly bushes on each side of the bay window and various other lower plants right under the window, any suggestions, ideas? Thanks!
How do I keep unwanted bugs out of my butterfly garden? My daughter and I started a small butterfly garden from seed (a retail mix in an envelope). I have also planted moonflowers and morning glories to grow up the fence in the back of the garden. Ants and aphids or something are eating the leaves of my morning glories and moonflowers, and some of the leaves of the new plants that are sprouting. How can I stop whatever is eating my plants from killing the garden before it even gets going? Since it will be a butterfly garden, I obviously do not want to kill ALL the insects with some kind of spray, I still want to attract the butterflies. Any suggestions?
preparing a garden bed for a butterfly garden.? it will be on the south side of my house, and i live in zone 5 ( dont know if that matters). here is the garden that i am going to try to build. it is the second one down http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/gardens/butterfly/designs.html how do i get the soil ready for the plants? and do i put mulch in around the plants? ive never had a garden before so im kinda just learning. i am going to go get a book from the library next week, but i want to see if i can even afford to try to build a garden like this. also if you look at the size scale of that garden, it is the same size as the area i have to use. about how many plants of each of those flowers should i purchase? i have been told that most of those spread, so should i just buy like 1 or two plants of each or should i try to plant seeds? any ideas are appreciated? thanks
Will ants ruin my plants? I have recently planted a load of plants in my garden... hydrangas, butterfly plants, rhoadadendrum and some strawberries and beans. Every time I go to water the plants I notice a lot of ants on them. I'm worried that the ants are going to ruin the plants. I've noticed the beans have got nibbled.
can I leave fallen leaves on my plants? I have a rose garden and a butterfly garden that are basically covered in leaves to the point you can only see the tops, this even though we have been constantly raking/blowing leaves. This may sound dumb, but is it ok to just leave the leaves over the roses and other flowers as winter protection? I already have mulch on these plants, but I was wondering abou the leaves as they seem like a good blanket over the flowers.
should I prune my butterfly bush or move it? I have 2 butterfly bushes in my raised garden bed (planted last summer) and one of them grew alot bigger than I expected it to. I've been thinking about moving it to an area where it can grow (somewhat) freely. My other option is to prune it back to try to keep the size under control. What is the best approach to take with this plant?
Do you try to attract birds and butterflies to your garden? Are there features like a fountain or pond in your yard? Native flowers? Butterfly host plants? I live near open space so I'm thrilled to have both birds and butterflies in my yard and am always looking for ways to attract more species.
"Blooming" plants for an asian inspired garden? (Zone 8)? I need some ideas for plants for my asian inspired garden. I've found tons of ground coverings & grasses & things that don't produce blooms. Now I'm trying to find some plants with color that will hopefully attract butterflies, but need them to fit into the asian theme, & they need to be able to thrive in Zone 8. Any help is appreciated. Thanks! Forgot to mention, I am wanting flowering plants.
Will a butterfly feeder endanger a vegetable patch? My dad loves his garden, so I was going to buy a butterfly feeder/house for him. However, I was wondering if this would ultimately attract more butterflies to lay more eggs on his vegetables and flowers, which would be very very bad. Has anyone got any experience with increasing numbers of butterflies in their garden, resulting in more plants being chomped? Thanks!
