Shade garden plants? I want to plant a shade garden in my front yard what plants do you reccomend? I have a good sized maple tree that this will be next to. I was planning on using some hostas but what else would look nice? Also, if it's important I'm in northern Virginia. Thanks!
What are some good plants for a shade garden? I am planting a meditation garden, that has moderate to deep shade. I already have Kentucky Bluegrass and Hostas installed, but am looking for some other ideas for color. Suggestions, anybody?
Dog Friendly Shade Garden Plants/Ground Cover? We have a 1/2 acre partially wooded lot. We have approxmately 30 huge trees and nothing grows in the wooded area except for weeds. The rest of the time it is bare earth. Any thoughts on a good shade-loving ground cover? I'd prefer no Ivy. Our neighbors have Ivy and it's out of control. Oh yeah, We just got a dog and all plant would need to be dog friendly, ie, not poisonous.
Any good deer-resistant plants for a shade garden? I am dealing with two problems in one here: 1. My front yard faces North and gets very little sun. 2. We have an outrageously large deer population that isn't too picky about food. I'm planning on creating two plots: one is about 2' by 10' and the other is a quarter-circle, about 5' in radius. Also, I live in Virginia, if that helps. Given that anything is better than nothing, suggest away! Flowering plants, decorative grasses, shrubs, herbs - I don't care!
What flowering plants do well in a shade garden? It's a raised bed so soil condition is of no concern but it's under a tree so it will get almost no sun, only early morning and late evening. I live in Southwest Idaho so we have cold dry winters and hot summers.
What are good full-shade, heat-tolerant plants for a school garden? I'm planning an Eagle Scout project for an elementary school that involves replanting a disused flowerbed, 2' x 42' 2", which is in full shade for most of the day due to placement between buildings. I need to find good perennials and a few annuals that can flourish in shade and are heat-tolerant so they'll be able to survive the weather down here in North-Central Texas. Any and all suggestions would be helpful and very much appreciated. Thanks!
What's good to plant in a part-shade garden? Am looking for some plants to grow in a part-shade/sun garden in my front yard that are low maintenance(minimal pruning, etc), help deter weeds and preferably has flowers of some sort. I've already tried petunias but they become very messy after a while.
Shade garden plant suggestions? There is an area in my back yard under a dense tree that I have decided to make a mulch shade garden instead of planting grass. The area is probably 20' X 20' with the tree in the middle. It is in the corner of my yard so it is surrounded by fence on 2 sides and the house on the other and then opens up to my yard. Because this area gets barely any direct sunlight, I need some suggestions on what plants to plant. So far I have bought 2 burford hollys and 3 emerald spread jananese yews. I am looking for some small understory trees that will grow around 6 feet high, a couple more shrubs and maybe a bit of ground cover. Most of the plants will be along the fence/house and around the tree leaving an area for people/ dogs to walk. Thanks!
Scale on Perennials in a shade garden? Almost Oct in St. Louis, MO. I went out and found scale all over the plants in one shade garden. Hosta, astilbe, liriope and Jap painted Fern. This is not a lite investation. There are 1000's. From back of leaves to the stems where they go into the ground. The scale is also all over the vinyl siding of the house. I can't understand this. Can scale be brought in on shredded bark mulch in the spring? I've just never had scale on yard plants before, just house plants. My first thought was to cut everything to the ground, take out all the mulch and treat the soil. Burn all the plant debris. I've already scraped them off my siding. Please tell me what to do. What do I spray with etc.. I welcome any ideas. These scale are brown, the size of a pencil point approx.. What are the chances of the scale coming back next year?
Best plants 2 plant in a semi shaded garden? I have a garden that is bare at the moment. I recently pulled everything out of it.......it was dead. I need to know wot plants/flowers would grow best in a semi shaded area in the southern hemisphere at the moment. I would prefer plants that need minimal water.......(water restrictions here r high) any ideas?? thanks
How to grow plants in the shade? I am wanting to grow something in my front yard. The area is in the shade under a tree. I have heard of a "shade garden" but I don't know what that is. If anyone could give me an example of some plants that I could grow.
Plants for a very small shade garden? My husband and I have a tiny little palm tree courtyard in the back of our house (we live downtown) that is enclosed by tall buildings. The area is about 12' by 9' (tiny....). We built our house around an existing palm tree that we used to have, which is definitely a point of interest when you look into the small courtyard and you see this tall palm tree climbing up along side two tall adjacent buildings. The plam tree is to the right of the courtyard, but with all the buildings surrounding it, we get VERY LITTLE to no sun at all in there. We would like to make this courtyard look very peaceful, but both of us are very green when it comes to gardening, so we don't even know where to start. What plants, flowers, shrubs, or tiny trees would do well in such a small, shady area? We plan on having river rock on the ground and most of the plants I want to place in pots (rectangular pots). The house is very modern so we would like to keep the shade garden in the same style (nothing too crazy or too busy). Thanks for any suggestions you may have. oops...I failed to mention that we live in southern part of California.
Plants, shrubs and trees for a large, no shade garden in Houston? OK...so I need some ideas...I'm not from the US, let alone Houston and need some advice as to what to plant in my large yard that has no shade.. I want trees, shrubs and anything else that might survive this heat! I don't have irrigation, so please bear that in mind with your recs....any advice welcome as to what I should fertilise with or where I can get the plants in my area apart from home depot! I'm interested in plant swaps and eco-fiendly ideas for garden materials...thanks for your help!
Proper placement of tall garden plants? I have two garden bed's that run east to west 22 feet long. I wanted to plant sunflowers but I do not want to put the rest of the garden in the shade. Should I put the sunflowers on the east or west side?
What vegetable and fruit shade plants are there? I am planting flowers and fruits and veggies in my garden this year. my garden is spread out over my backyard and one spot doesnt get much sunlight. I wanted to plant a type of food this year. I need a list of shade plants that are edible. Herbs are okay too! WHoever gives a full complete and good answer will get best answer!
Can you recommend any shade loving plants for a California, Central Coast backyard? We are open to different types. Ideally, we would love to plant an edible garden of fruits and veggies, but we also are okay with shrubs and flowers. Our backyard gets full shade to partial shade. It may change a bit after we trim back the oak trees hanging over from the neighbor's yard, but it will still get quite a big of shade. They will mostly be in raised beds and pots. I was thinking mint, basil and berries. What else loves shade?
Need help finding shade loving plants for my new garden...? I live in zone 8b. My small garden is on the northfacing side of my house, and gets almost no sun. I had this vision of blooming flowers with Wisteria climbing a trellis, but I guess that won't happen. I would still like some flowers, and maybe even a flowering vine if anyone knows of any that will survive in the full shade... If not, any pretty greenery is good enough for me :) This will be my first garden, so I kind of need some hardy perennials that will forgive my mistakes. Thank you.
10 Points for best idea to fill partial/full shade garden? the garden is brand new. It is about 20 feet long by 3-4 feet deep. So far, I have 1 rhododendron planted in one corner. What are some other plants that like to have full/partial shade that will flower in mid to late summer? I would like to fill it with different plants that flower in different times of the summer. Thanks!
Thunbergia in a shade garden? Thunbergia grandiflora, specifically. On the north facing side of my house is the porch which has a 4ft tall brick wall alongside it right under the overhang. It gets NO sun. I have a shade garden going there, and would like to plant a thunbergia there to vine up and around the wall. My Mom has one doing great on the east side of her house under the overhang, but I think it gets a little morning sun. I was wondering if anyone had any idea if it might do okay in full shade. Will it flower? Thanks!
Plants in morning sun and Afternoon shade? We're planting a garden in our backyard and we want to put some plants near our house, but they will be in morning sun and afternoon shade. What plants do well in that environment????
Does a high UV index cause garden vegetable plants not to grow as well? My garden vegetables plants are not growing well this summer. I have tomatoes, squash, hot peppers, basil and oregano. The plants are very short and less developed as compared with other summers. I'm wondering if it could be the high UV index we've been having. It's also been cooler than usual and much rainier than usual. The soil is fresh and all else seems to be in order. Should I move them into the shade or it more likely that it's the cooler temperatures and too much rain that's the cause of their underdevelopment? Many thanks.
can anyone suggest some plants for my garden? I was hoping to start a small garden this spring, but I'm not sure what types of plants to start with. I'm in Monmouth county New Jersey. I need plants that do well in shade and maybe a suggestion for a fruit plant?

What plants will grow in shade only areas? I have an area in my garden that never ever gets sun. I would like to put some nice plants in big pots in that area, if that's possible. Does anyone have any ideas about plants that thrive in shade-only areas, preferably plants that can live in a pot.
How to choose plants for specific areas in my garden ? My garden is quite small and has a lot of large trees in it which use up all the water. The only plants I have managed to grow are bluebells and a strange yellow daisy that looks like a sunflower but has thick yellow roots and comes up every year. Both have became a problem and have engulfed the whole garden. Are there any plants that will grow well in dry nutrient depleted soil in sun or partial shade? (which are not weeds.) thanks
What plants are best for a balcony garden? I live in on the 3rd floor of my apartment building and have a balcony. I wanted to start a small garden with some potted plants but I am not sure what would really work well. There is a big tree that is in front of my balcony so it only gets partial sun in the morning and then is in the shade most of the time.
Does anyone know of any plants that can survive in full shade? I have a corner in my garden that is in full shade and find it difficult to find plants that will survive there. The grass hardly grows there so would like to fill that corner with plants. Does anyone know of any plants/shrubs that will survive in a fully shaded area? I live in the UK so preferably would like suggestions of plants that I can get here. Thanks
What flowering plants will grow in shade and acid soil? I have a garden (New York city suburb) with acid soil (ph 5.5-6) and mostly in the shade of huge 100-year old trees. The previous owner planted ferns all over the place, which I really don't like. Does anybody have experience of any colorful plants -- i.e. flowers or flowering bushes -- that would thrive under these conditions? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Are there any shade-loving plants that are resistant to slugs (or that slugs don't like)? I have some hostas in a rock garden, in a very shady spot, that look just terrible, holes all over the leaves, and I know it's from slugs. Honestly, rather than combat the slugs, I think I'd like to plant something else there, something low or shrub-like maybe. I live in Michigan, for zone reference. Anyone have ideas for plants that could do well in a spot like this? Looking for something fairly easy, low to medium maintenance.
What are your favorite flowering plants for shade gardens? Looking for suggestions other than Azalea, Astilbe, Hosta and Impatiens that you have had success with in zone 7 for the north wall of an apartment building court yard. Though it is pretty bright, it isn't exactly direct sun except for a few hours and I don't have a lot of money to spend experimenting with everything I would like to. I am especially interested in flowering climbers like Clematis and preferably perennials and hopefully there be some roses that may grow there too if you know of one please, but anything you can suggest to bring more colorful flowers that will grow well there would be most appreciated. Thanks much. haha The UK is kinda far Sandra but I am glad I looked because I like the Moroccan fountain and a hanging garden is a great idea so thanks for that. Lilies in the shade? Wow!

I have a corner nearby my Bird's Garden bed. It's more shade than sun, which plant would surive there? I made a wonderful garden bed, with all sorts of ornamental, and bird bath, and decorative flowers. It's flourishing quite well. I have about six feeders with different kind's of bird food in it. I have wood chips on top of the soil, in it I just have spread out some seeds that came in packages. Now I wonder what to do with the shady area, that lies there openly. Any ideas what could grow there? I live in Northern Utah.
What vegetable plants thrive in shade? I have two raised beds in my garden for vegetables. One gets full sun the other has shade for a good portion of the day. What vegetables will do well in the shady bed? Also, I am in Southern Oregon if that makes a difference. Thanks!
Plants that grow in shade? Okay so I really want to plant a garden. But the probelm with my house is we have 3 HUGE trees in the front of our house ... so we don't really get much sun light.
