Best low maintenance flowers/plants for garden? Hello, i've never had a garden before, so am completley inexperienced. What plants and flowers would people recommend to plant? I don't have a great deal of money to spend, and would prefer something that will be sort of capable of looking after itself. I live in the UK.

What are the best plants/flowers to plant for a boarder around my vegetable garden? I would love a nice boarder around my veg garden that will keep out crawlies and critters that will harvest my crops before I get to. My biggest concerns are green worms/caterpillers that blend very lovely like into salad greens and broccoli... I have a good sized garden and plan to plant a wide variety of veg to see what grows well and what doesn't, being this is our first year in our home.
Flowers/plants that smell nice in the garden? I am looking for flowers/plants that are easy to grow/maintain that have a nice strong smell. Are you breaking up your perennial garden/plants in the Central Connecticut area? I would be very interested in providing a good home for your Hostas, Black-eyed Susans, Cannas, etc. At 56 have worked too hard and have not spent enough time 'smelling the roses". About 3 years ago I had reason to slow down and was "bitten" by the gardening bug and have developed a deep passion for it. . I am on a mission to populate my new garden with beautiful plants and flowers without going broke and before a progressive and ultimately disabling neurological illlness makes it difficult if not impossible.
Parents, do you start your gardening plants/flowers from seeds or do you buy plants? If you start them from seeds how long does it take for you to have a "strong" (flowering) plant for your garden? Yes, I know the seed packet will tell you and it depends on the type of plant but, it has been my experience, that the seeds did not "flower" until much later than the packet stated. This could just be me or something I'm doing wrong. I'm getting all my gardening stuff around so that I can start all my own plants this year. Do you have any advice and/or tips? BQ: Do your children like to help you in the garden? My LO loves it, the 16 y/o not so much. :)
Best plants/flowers for encouraging bees/butterflies into my garden I'm redoing my garden and would like to leave a part of it wild to encourage bees, butterflies and ladybirds into it but haven't a clue what to plant. Thanks Andrea P.S If you know of any plants that would discourage wasps and next doors cat, that'd be fab too! Lol. I have nothing against cats usually but, there's 3 of them and I have a toddler that likes nothing more than " Helping " with the gardening! Ooo, I love nightscented stock and already have lavender!
Why am I so obsessed with gardening, plants, flowers, animals and birds? I noticed that I have been obsessed with gardenting since it's my first time starting a veggtable garden. Me and my boyfriend went to Lowe's yesterday and I spent 30 min in the garden area I wanted to buy everything I just ended up buying hummingbir food and a blueberry bush. I Went home and I started to pull a bunch of weeds and clean and water my garden, then I layed bird and squirrel food along my fence and I cleaned my hummingbird feeders and filled them up with hummingbird necter that I had made. I told my boyriend I should have bought a couple of more plants and seed that I saw there at the store but when I go back I will buy them. I want to buy and plant everything I love all plants and growing them from a seed. I love giving the seeds life because plants give oxygen to the world. Is there something wrong with me? oh and if you have garden design ideas please feel free to share. Thank you.
does the "Private life of Plants" documentary explain how flowers, planets, weeds set seed, etc? as am interested in the life cycles of plants and flowers..how they bloom, reproduce, set seed, go into dormancy etc. and how trees, weeds, and plants all set seeds and how? will this documentary explain this and does it show a variety of different garden plants, flowers..such as hydrangeas, etc? please explain what you can about this,,and is it worth the money..as it is much more expensive than the other nature docs by david attenborough..why is this maybe>? thanks for your answers! My 4 year old daughter wants to plant a garden (flowers) and I don't have a clue of what to do.? I live in chicago and I want to know if this is a good time to plant anything and if so, what is something simple and inexpensive to plant and maintain? Are there any plants or flowers that we put in the ground now or should we only put down seeds? I'm sure my daughter is going to want to see results fast. I don't have a green thumb at all, so I need to know where to go and what to do.
use the analogy of a garden with flowers planted in neat rows to describe entropy and spontaneity.? in your discussion, consider the following questions: is the process of a garden becoming organized, with flowers in rows, most analogous to a spontaneous or non-spontaneous process? is a garden with flowers planted in neat rows higher or lower in entropy than a garden with weeds? is the process of a garden becoming filled with weeds spontaneous or non-spontaneous? is the reverse process, that of a garden ridding itself of weeds, spontaneous or non-spontaneous?

Best Plants / Flowers for a Garden with Lots of Sunshine? ? I just moved to Guadalajara, Mexico and the house I'm renting has two nice little garden areas in the front. This area of Mexico has a very nice, temperate climate where it isn't very humid (we're very high in elevation), it is sunny most every day of the year and the weather generally stays within 80 F Degrees as a high and 40 F degrees as a low. We pretty much just have a wet and dry season. You could say it is a gardeners dream, but there isn't much space for gardening. Anyway, the house faces west and the two little patches of garden are right in front, so the garden is going to get pretty hot and a LOT of sunshine. I already plan on planting a lot of roses (the city's nickname is 'the city of roses' after all), but what other flowers or plants are the best for a garden that gets a lot of sun? Thanks!
Is it too late in the season to plant flowers for a little corner garden? I want to plant a little corner garden, about 3x4 ft, in my backyard. I am thinking of getting one of those roll out flower seed mats and some flowering plants intermingled. Is it too late in the season for this? I am in the southeast part of the us, tn/ky area, and it is right around 70/80 usual temp right now.
What are some names of online plant/garden nurseries? I'm looking to order some plants/flowers for my gardens for this spring, but I can't remember any names of nurseries that deliver nationally. I don't like Burpee, and am open to new places. Can anyone personally recommend some places they've used. Please do NOT just Google search places and post them, I'm looking for gardener recommended places that sell Starter plants. Thanks!

What is a good website for browsing annual garden flowers/plants? The Michigan Bulb Company is great for perrenials but they don't carry most of the flowers that are considered annuals for my area (zone 6). Are there any great online flower/plant guides out there? Or even an online store that carries annuals I can use for browsing?
Will spraying a Weed Herbicide on Flowers and garden kill my plants? I bought this product called Weed-Out which claims will kill all kinds of broadleaf weeds such as dandelions from my lawn. I just attach it to my hose and spray away. Can someone tell me, i have a garden next to my lawn and so when i spray this weed herbicide will it kill my flowers and bushels too if i spray the liquid on them too? The grass seems fine so i am guessing this weed herbicide is selective in killing just the weeds?
Gardening / planting question? Whiskey barrel garden flowers? Is there anything you need to do to a half whiskey barrel before planting flowers in it? What I mean is...the smell of whiskey coming from a whiskey barrel is so strong, it seems like it would be toxic to the plants! Does it affect them in any way? Other than maybe making drunk plants?lol

Cut flower garden- which plants grow best in the tropics? I live on a Caribbean island. I'd like to put in a cut flower garden so I can do flower arrangements. Right now I have a lot of bird of paradise flowers, but I'm looking for some variety. I'd like to order some seeds from the US, and pick up whatever I can find locally. But I'm not sure what holds over well in a vase. Know of any sites or forums on gardening in the tropics?
I am planting a flower garden from seed in Yucca Valley CA, what flowers grow best in that desert area? I am moving to Yucca Valley in Jan(from Ohio) and want to be prepared to plant the seeds in early spring. I want flowers that will grow in the natural desert soil without adding topsoil and ones that wont need much watering after they are established. I have a lot of area to work with so I want to do areas with wildflowers and also regular flowers. Ive been doing tons of searches but surprisingly enough cannot find any one book or source for desert flowers, so am trying to figure it out by searching : arid soil, sandy soil, zone 9, full sun etc and then trying to pick out ones common to all the lists. Unfortunately, while I have found a lsome useful information about wild flowers, I've found very little on *regular* flowers.. So if anyone has experience with flower gardening in the Mojave/desert any help would be appreciated. Thanks so much . Mykiel
what kind of flowers and plants should i get for my garden? This is the situation, my neighbors from both sides hang their clothes in their backyard, which i think it looks very bad, specially when you have guest at home. I am planning to get plants to actually cover the entire view to my neighbors. Also i love flowers and want to get very colorful yet strong flowers that dont require much attention. Forgot to mention that i live in miami, very humid and rains a lot. thanks :)
What kind of flowers or plants are easy to keep up in a garden? I live in Louisiana and I am trying to plant some flowers in the front of my house that look orderly and are easy to keep up. The people that lived here before me have 3 rose bushes and a hibiscus plant that just look to haggard to keep in the front of my small house. I just want something that looks pretty, small, and are easy to keep up. The roses have got to go. Something preferably white but anything will do. Thanks a lot!
