Flower Garden Layout Knowledge Base
Any great backyard flower garden layouts? My first backyard (long rectangular shape with trees in corners) and I really want to design a great flower garden layout. Anyone know of any websites with great garden layouts? I want neat ideas. Thanks!
Can you give me advice? Creating my first flower garden...? My soil is ready, I've done some research on flowers & I think I'm going shopping today to start buying! I have a large space to fill, and I'm just nervous on how to make the layout look nice. Any advice? And if you have any general flowers (or anything) that you'd recommend to a first timer, what are they? I live in North Carolina - near the coast. I'm sure that makes a difference, so just in case, I wanted to make sure I added it!
Does this sound like a good garden layout? I have a plot I can't wait to garden in. I've been planting over the years, but since I was in college I haven't had much time to really get into it. Now I finally have a spot I can garden in, and since I cut out a lot of "habits" like TV, i have more time to garden! The plot runs long north to south, and the hill slopes south, so i will plant my rows east to west, which just sounds better to me anyways. But I will have some peas growing on the deer fence all the way north, then the tallest crops (don't care if the peas get shaded out as they probably won't be around during the heat of summer. It will be Corn, Sunflowers, Cucumbers, then Tomatoes, Peppers or Kale, and lettuce, carrots, radishes, beets, etc..... If you can get the picture.....And those will be all my annual crops. Then I'll have a dividing strip/row to separate annuals and perennials. Now worried about what get's planted in it, as long as it divides....but it won't be wasted space for sure.... And I'll start again, in the perennial garden, with the tallest crops, like mullein, artichoke, lavender, hyssop, down to the shorter ones, like ground cover flowers...etc. Is this a good layout? Does anyone do anything similar or have any suggestions? Pointers? Advice? It's for a good cause! Thanks!
Garden plans / layouts...good sources? Hi...I'm wanting to do my flower garden a little different this year, and I was wondering where I could find some good layout pictures and ideas? Like a website,or a magazine,or just any ideas you may have. I have a veggie garden too, so any ideas for that are welcome as well :) Thanks in advance!
What is a decent, hardy, North Texas patio garden layout? I live in a lovely (little) condo in North Texas (DFW area) and am quite ready to cultivate my small space; I have a concrete patio where potted plants would work well and a smaller, shaded patio with actual soil surrounding it. I am gone all day long and do not have ample time to play gardner, but I feel that a weekend or an evening here or there to till a bit of land and prune a leaf or two would be rather zen and quite beneficial - it was Basho who said, after all: "I am one who eats his breakfast gazing at the morning-glories" ^_^ Might there be any suggestions for some nice (not necessarily flowering) plants that will survive in my surroundings?
What kind of garden was the garden of Eden? There are so many kinds of gardens. What kind was the garden of Eden? Was it a flower garden? A vegetable garden? An English country garden? A French garden? A Chinese garden? A kaiyu-shiki? Did it have an orangery? What was the layout? There sure were a lot of trees. Are we sure it wasn't an orchard?
Herb garden, easy, looks good, and useful....? I have never had a garden before, i've never really gardened before either. BUT my dad is a landscaper and could definitely help me. However i wanted to try it on my own, he can help with the layout. But i wanted to start a herb garden, so meting different than your usual flower garden. That way it would look good and could be useful as well. What is something simple and easy to start with. and how should i go about doing it? so basically i want a herb garden that will look good, easy to maintain and that will be useful for like lots of stuff candles, insense, dyes, decoration etc. sorry, if it's kind of confusing... i'm really bad at explaining things. To Nora; 1. i live in richmond hill, ontario, canada and, 2. A mix of annual and perennial are good.
Chelsea Flower Show? What is the principle reason you would visit The RHS Chelsea Flower Show a) to see garden designs and layouts? b) to see the latest gardening products? c) to witness the floral colour cascades and scents? A general question from the Rainsmart team
Can a garden be organic if lawn chemicals were previously used? I'd like to have a vegetable/flower garden in our yard but currently don't think I want square foot gardening. (I may raise the soil below the plants, however, and will probably not use a traditional layout plan, as I'd like to be a bit more artistic.) We had crabgrass preventer and a weed/fertilizer treatment put on once or twice last year and have generally not used it more than once or twice yearly in previous years. Can our garden ever really be organic if those substances are in the soil? Including a link to your source of information and/or explaining your expertise/background when answering will be very helpful. Thanks!
what garden possibility do i have for a down sloping backyard? we're looking at buying a house on a 1000 sq metre block (so big back yard) but it isnt completely flat. i havnt seen it myself (except in photos) apparently when you walk out the door the is an area that is flat but then the majority of the yard is a slope down. i would like the possibility of having a veggie garden, not to mention i'd love a pond and a big area for my toddler and infant to play, with all the other beautiful garden flower beds etc etc so what possibilities do i have of having that sort of garden on a slope? what sort of layout would i need? etc etc (the soil is VERY good) thanks any suggestions or people with similar back yards would be great THANKS!!
What are some tips for home gardening to attract birds? Besides using bird houses, feeders, and baths. Do you use your flower beds and landscaping to attract birds to your yard? What plants do you use? How do you layout your garden in respect to birdbaths, feeders and houses?
Where to Find Garden Plans or Customize Myself Online? Im looking to do some garden landscaping & in need of some websites that I can maximize every bit of space that I have. Im start'g on the side yard 1st & have put in my 2 trees & some sod & put in a drip system. But now I need to frame the area around the sod & my trees & in between the 2 (roughly 26'x22'). But not sure where to put the flowers. I intend to use a total of 30+ varieties as this will be my Master Garden. Is there a website that will let me create this on my own by color? Im only using shades of Blues, Pinks, & Purples and White and a Purple Alyssum as a ground cover. Or any websites that could/would show me layouts that have been sketched & used to give me some ideas? Im think'g of mixing a Mediterranean Garden, a Country Garden, & Arizona Native Garden for my Master Garden.
Would this layout work in my garden? Think of it as a long rectangle shape. I have pansys (or whatever anual is in season) in front for 3 close lines. Behind those I'm going to put columbines in the same clustered lines. Behind those I'm planning on putting lily's, same clustered lines. And behind everything I'm going to put taller hosta's with a jasmine plant in the middle between the two windows. We don't have gutters on the house, so when it rains, it's like a water fall falling on the area the hostas will be in. I had lilies there last year and everytime it rained, the water would knock off the flowers. If you have any suggestions or comments, please let me know. I'm in zone 8 and the area they will be in is partial sun/shade. Thanks for any input.
Easy math problem please help show work? the above diagram is the layout of a park that 50ft long and 20ft wide. there are 2 circular flower gardens, each 7ft in diameter, and a square garden that is 14 feet square, the remainder of the park is covered with grass. there is a rectangle shaded and inside it is two circle and a square 1.how many square ft are there in each of the circular gardens? 2. how many squareft are in the square garden? 3. how much of the park is covered with grass?
Questions about a perennial garden.? I am soon to start working on a garden at my house. It will come about 3 or 4 feet off the house, be bordered by some recycled bricks, and I am going to use the plastic sheeting to keep weeds at bay. I really want to plant it once and not mess with it again. This means I need to plant perennials right? What I was thinking of growing is Dahlia, Balloon Flower, Bleeding Hearts, Iris, Butterfly Bush, Bellflower, Daylily, Echinacea, and Hydrangea. I am still working on the layout, but I want to know if I just plant these once and then they bloom back every year. I don't want to pull up bulbs and roots every year and replant them. Like I said, I am using the plastic sheeting and don't want to mess it up every year.
Is this a good idea for the garden? I have a plot I can't wait to garden in. I've been planting over the years, but since I was in college I haven't had much time to really get into it. What would be the best location to plant veggies and herbs? Okay at school we have a small plot in the back for a butterfly garden that we are going to create tomorrow. My teacher bought veggies, herbs and only flowers that are suppose to attract butterflies. So tomorrow we are going to design it and apparently plant it. I thought we were going to take more time to actually plan the layout of the garden but looks like we are just going to dig in. So I want quickly gather some information on what would possible be the most beneficial layout (I don't know if herbs would be better next to the veggies or the veggies next to the flowers whatnot). So hopefully this small research will be helpful tomorrow when a bunch of kids show up ready to get their hands dirty (all I can think of is chaos ::shivers::). SO absolutely any help would be fantastic!
Suitable flowers/shrubs? I have a small-medium north facing garden and live in a 3 storey house which blocks out even more sun in the garden. I'm looking to totally re-do the layout as it was when we moved in and put decking at the end of the garden (where we get a little sun) and have the rest laid to lawn. I plan on having a border around the sides of the lawn with various flowers and shrubs but what kind would be suitable for an almost fully shaded garden. Also could you tell me whether the lawn would be able to thrive in total shade?
**10 POINTS** What kind of flowers are ...? I'm wanting to start a little garden to keep me occupied and to help ease my anxiety and stress; taking care of Daylillies really calmed me. I have a layout planned for the yard but do not wish to forget it when the flowers die, what are some annual flowers that I could plant? They also need to be able to grow in the shade, the front yard has jack for sunlight.

How to do companion gardening? I have a few questions about companion gardening. I plan on planting a bit today, and want to do this the best I can. :) 1) How close do the "companions" have to be? Like should they just be in the row next to it's partner, or planted mixed in with them? 2) What are some companion plants/layouts, if you know of any? If a list of what I'm planting would help, I can provide that. Well hell, I'll just go ahead and list it. :) -Tomatoes (both regular sized and cherry) -Spinach -Leaf lettuce -Carrots -Onions, probably -Radishes, probably -Cilantro -Basil -Broccoli -Bell peppers -Yellow squash -Zucchini -Watermelon -Peas -Okra -Cucumbers -Sunflowers and other types of flowers (Marigolds, Gladiolas, and Freesia, to be exact) -Oh, and probably some baking pumpkin Anyway, I'm only planning on planting a few of each thing, not a whole row of each, if that makes any difference. Thanks for any help!!
