Need some help with planting a flower garden!? Hey Everyone! I am moving to a new house in the next couple weeks and noticed that the previous tenants had a small flower bed in the front of the condo. I have never planted my own garden before, only helped my mom. What is the best way to do it? Should I plants seeds or potted plants? Also what are some suggestions for easy growing purple, pink, yellow & white flowers? can you grow gerber daisies? Your help would be appreciated, I'm pretty clueless when it comes to this stuff!! Thanks!

How long after I use Weed-B-Gon can I plant a flower garden? I am a beginner gardener and I am reclaiming two flower garden spaces in my yard. I am using weed-b-gon because the previous owners of our house let the gardens get overgrown with weeds. So how long after I have used the weed-b-gon can I start planting flowers without them getting killed?
I am planting a flower garden from seed in Yucca Valley CA, what flowers grow best in that desert area? I am moving to Yucca Valley in Jan(from Ohio) and want to be prepared to plant the seeds in early spring. I want flowers that will grow in the natural desert soil without adding topsoil and ones that wont need much watering after they are established. I have a lot of area to work with so I want to do areas with wildflowers and also regular flowers. Ive been doing tons of searches but surprisingly enough cannot find any one book or source for desert flowers, so am trying to figure it out by searching : arid soil, sandy soil, zone 9, full sun etc and then trying to pick out ones common to all the lists. Unfortunately, while I have found a lsome useful information about wild flowers, I've found very little on *regular* flowers.. So if anyone has experience with flower gardening in the Mojave/desert any help would be appreciated. Thanks so much . Mykiel
Need some help with my flower garden. 2nd time planting. Easy question? Hello :) So i have decided that i love gardening. I grew some flowers last year, and loved it. This time around, I wanted to have a bigger flower garden. (its on my balcony since i live in an apartment). I will be planting a wildflower mix, Forget-Me-Not's, Columbine, California Poppy, and Bachelor Button. (in different pots) With my Bachelor Button mix it says on the back of the package, "Thin seedlings when they are 2-3 inches in height..." What does "Thinning" mean? Also, last year, i had a few problems with bugs eating my flowers and leaves, What can i do to stop this? Also (dumb question) I had problems with bee's last year. They can be sort of a pest especially if i want to sit outside in my garden and relax. (im scared of bee's) Is there anything i can do to lower this to a minimum? i know bee's come with the territory of planting flowers, But is there anything i can do? Thank you :) What do you mean "Pull out half the sprouts" ? Sorry. Im new to this. Also, If there's anything i can do to help my garden become lush and beautiful, PLEASE let me know :) Any tips or advice is welcome :)

Planting my flowers and getting a flower garden? I have a strip of lawn in the front of my house that I want to turn into a little flower garden. How do I go about it, because all that is there now is grass? Do I just dig up all the grass chunks along with the dirt? Is there anything to do to stop the grass from growing back? Any help would be appreciated.
Gardening / planting question? Whiskey barrel garden flowers? Is there anything you need to do to a half whiskey barrel before planting flowers in it? What I mean is...the smell of whiskey coming from a whiskey barrel is so strong, it seems like it would be toxic to the plants! Does it affect them in any way? Other than maybe making drunk plants?lol
First time planting a flower garden... any tips? We just bought our first house and I want to plant a flower garden. What are some low maintenance pretty flowers? Annuals maybe? Can you give us any suggestions and other tips?? Thank you so much in advance!
How am I supposed to prepare a garden bed for planting a small flower garden? I'm trying to rehabilitate a small strip of soil in front of our house that had been overgrown with weeds, and "decorated" with those little white decorative stones that haven't been popular since the 60s. I've spent two days getting all the weeds out, digging down to the roots for the bigger ones. Now I just have some mounds of dirt peppered with those damn white stones. What should I do from here? I was thinking to just cut my losses, and shovel the stones, dirt and all, into a bucket and buy new soil. (It's only about a 12 ft by 3 ft strip). If there's something else I should do, what is it? Also, I just want it to be something very simple, just a few annuals with some mulch on top. Nothing high maintenance (lest it turn into a weed garden again! :) Thanks!
What is a cat friendly plant/flower I can plant in my garden? I know that certain plants, flowers, and ferns are poisonous to cats. I am wanting to do some gardening this spring but part of the garden is in my back yard where my two cats occasionally play. I want to make sure that I am not planting anything that could be harmful to them if they eat it...they chew on the grass sometimes and puke that up once they come inside which is disgusting but I can deal with that. Please if you are knowledgeable in this area help! Thanks.
Planting a flower garden? This summer my girlfriend and I plan to plant a flower garden. We have never done something like this before so we need some help. When should we start planting? My backyard has a mixture of sun and shade, so what flowers should we plant. We want a decently sized garden, maybe a 10 foot by 8 foot space. Is there any guide to this we should look at? So we can learn how to do this and get started! thanks a bunch :]
planting a garden in michigan? This spring, I am going to be planting a garden around my house. We have an old Michigan basement, and was told that by planting flowers and plants around the house, we could decrease the amount of moisture that comes into our basement. So my question is, what types of plants, flowering plants, and flowers are good at absorbing a lot of moisture and would do well in Michigan? I want the kind that will bloom every year because I don't want to have to replant everything. Any tips or advice on growing these plants and flowers would be helpful too as I've never planted a thing in my life before. Thanks!
What is a good ground covering or foliage to cover up bare spots in my flower garden? I am going to begin planting a flower garden tomorrow and it will consist of carpet of snow around the borders (then rocks as a barrier to keep the flowers from spilling into the yard) behind the carpet of snow will be poppies, zinnia and cosmos, maybe another couple of types of flowers. But what kind of foliage or green "filler" can I use to cover spots where flowers haven't grown, that isn't too high? I don't want it to hurt the flowers or be taller than them
Need Help planting a flower garden? I live in zone 7a-7b for gardening. I want to plant some annuals and periennials in my garden but don't know where to get started..I want it to be colorful all year long.. Can someone help me with plants that would do well and add depth.. Its in New Mexico if that helps..
What flower, garden plant is this? I have a new plant/ flower growing in my yard. It's not a weed. But I just moved to the property and the lady before me had a pretty good sized garden... The one I am talking about in particular is in rather small bunches, but it's a rather large group. The leaves are similar to that of a daffodil, but they are shorter and they are curved and shaped like a boat at the ends. In the middle of one is a bloom... the bloom kind of resembles the top of a piece of asparagus. Its reddish-purple, and small. The bloomed has not bloomed yet, but it's just showing out of hte very center of this small bunch of leaves... If anyone could help me out I would appreciate it... Lily Of The Nile has the right leaves, but the bloom is like a top of a piece of asparagus, there really is no other way to describe it. Lily Of The Nile has more of a bulb that splits off to the several individual blooms. I dont think thats it. But thanks anyways. If it helps, I live in arkansas... Thank you answerer, I do believe it is a Hyacinth... Thank you very much...
Planting a Flower Garden...Help? I've never grown a garden before, but I really want to give it a try. I'm planting a flower garden. I got some tools already, and I've already got some seeds and bulbs. (zinnias, lilies, freesias, etc.) So I started by pulling up all the weeds. Now that the weeds are all gone, how to I actually go about planting my seeds and bulbs?? I know I want to put the taller ones in back, but is there anything I need to do to the soil first? Any other advice would be appreciated as well.

Anyone else planting a flower garden? My husband worked hard today and made me a big flower box so I can plant a flower garden in front of our house.I can't wait for everything to bloom! My daughter bought me an early Mother's Day gift.....a beautiful Pink Pixies plant. I just love Lillies!!!!
How to plant a flower garden? I never had a flower garden until I moved to my new home. Since the flowers died over the winter I have had to put them up and now it is bare with grass trying to grow through. I would love to plant beautiful flowers but I don't know the first thing about gardening. I intend to buy the flowers that have already bloomed at the garden center but I don't know how to get the flower beds ready, what type of flowers to buy (wanting them to bloom every year), or anything else. Your advice would be appreciated. PS I live in the Panhandle of Texas
How much topsoil do I need for planting a flower garden? I could really use some good gardening advice on this one! Okay, here's the situation: We dug up our entire front yard to put in an entrance to our basement. What was left there was a mixture of gravel and compacted clay-like earth. (the entire yard was interlocked before it was dug up) After sitting for a couple years while we renovated inside and spent copious amounts of money doing so :( we have finally got the yard interlocked and left a large portion for a flower garden. The workers brought in a dump of topsoil, but it's only between 3-4 inches deep. Beneath that is the hard, compacted clay stuff. So my question is how deep does the topsoil need to be to have a healthy flower garden? I would assume that water drainage could be a big problem. So do we have to dig it all up and bring in another load to make the topsoil deeper? Or can we just till it all together to about a foot deep so that the clay stuff gets mixed in with the soil? As you can see, we're novice gardeners. Please help us out!
When should you use fertilizer in your flower garden? I am a beginning gardner and just planted flowers in my flower bed. I mixed the dirt in the flower bed with bagged soil that contained fertilizer. Some of the flowers said on the tag to use a fertilizer treatment after planting them but should I not do it because the soil has fertilizer in it? Should I wait awhile? Any advice would be appreciated! I have no idea what I'm doing.
How do I remove white rocks from my soil to start a flower garden? I decided to plant a flower garden and as I began to clear the soil, I realized that someone had previously had a garden there and used white rocks to surround the flowers, so the soil is FULL of white rocks. What is the best way to remove them? Thanks for any help!
First time planting a garden.? I want to plant a flower garden, as well as a small vegetable garden this spring. First of all, what are the appropriate times to plant in Tennessee? And we have a lot of clay in the soil at our house. What do we need to do to get it ready for planting?
I really want a flower garden. Anything I can plant right now? In my new house is a quasi greenhouse. Well, it used to be. Now it is just this weird room between the outside and my room. It has two doors on either side that must remain open (for the sake of the pets). Anywho, I want to plant flowers in here. Well, I wanted veggies, but with all the animals... So are there any flowers that I can plant in jan? Ok. So it is a little cold. During the days 45 and at night closer to 20.

What is a good flower for an indoor garden? We were recently forced to roof over the open air atrium in the center of our house, due to constant wood rotting and poorly designed drainage. Now we are wishing we had put in a skylight instead because the flower garden we had out there no longer has ANY access to sunlight. Does anyone happen to know of some good plants/flowers that we could do in an entirely artificailly lit setting? Thanks in advance for all your aid.

How do I create a flower garden around a tree? I am a beginner in gardening and planting? I have an old tree in front of my home. I like to add a flower bed around the tree, but I am new to planting and gardening. Also, my lawn needs a lot of care. Last year my husband tilled part of our lawn and we replanted new grass, but our lawn looks very unhealty with a lot of try, burned like spots. What can I do to have a healthy lawn, and how do I go about creating my flower bed around the tree. I like to put a border around the tree like a small wall maybe. I want the flower bed be higher than the actual lawn. We have mostly clay dirt. Can you give me some advice and/or help. Thanks.
Planting a flower garden in Florida, shady area? My husband just put a planter box under an Oak tree in my back yard. It is mostly shaded except for a few hours in the late afternoon when it gets some sunlight mostly on the west side. I want flowers as (colorful as possible) that are relatively easy to care for and if possible will attract butterflies. I do not in any way have a "green thumb," so any and all help would be appreciated. Like I said, I have no clue what flowers like sun or shade. I am asking for what type (names please) of flowers I should ask for at the store.
what are you planning in planting in your garden this summer? we're going to plant flowers in front of our retaining wall and probably some tulips and other annuals. i want to plant hydragna bushes and more lilac bushes. i just want to plant a variety of flowers. and i'm gonna get a ton of flowers to plant in pots and planters. it's going to be really pretty and summery. so what are you going to plant in your garden this year???
What is a good garden plant (flower or shrub) that would look nice next to a white peony bush.? My fiance and I are not seasoned gardeners and recently pulled up some dead bushes. We want to replace the bushes with something unique, pretty, but relatively easy to care for. I say we're not seasoned, but we're not incompetent or first-timers, either. We can handle a certain amount of responsibility in the gardening arena. Just nothing too terribly complicated. The plant -whatever it may be- will be sandwiched between two white peony bushes, so I would like it to complement those. It can be a flower or a pretty shrub; something that would look good now, and perhaps later in the year, too. I've already considered rose bushes, and there's already one nearby, anyway. Thanks!

What is a flower garden called that makes a picture or spells words? I'm looking for the word that describes how flowers are planted or arranged in a garden to make a picture or spell out words. It's usually a large garden display, and the flowers form words (like at the end of a city and the flowers would spell out the name of the city, or the flowers would make a huge clock face). What's that called?

Just finished digging a 10' diameter flower garden (Dianthus varities) in our front yard. Uncertain what the Just finished digging a 10' diameter flower garden (Dianthus varities) in our front yard. Uncertain what the next step should be. Yep, this is a first for me. The soil appears to be in really good shape and removed all weeds and roots. Should I cover the bed with plastic and cut holes then plant the flowers? If so, after the flowers are planted, should I put something (bark perhaps?) on top of the plastic? Will the plastic provide too much moisture and destroy the roots of this particular flower? Do I need to mix potting soil with the dirt in my bed? Again, this is my first flower bed and I need instruction. Do you know anything about this particualr kind of flower? Your responses will be deeply appreciated. P.S. I dont want to spend a fortune on upkeep. I live in central Kentucky. Thank you.

Any ideas for planting a small flower garden around a lightpost? I live on the corner of my street and so on the very corner, I have and island of grass between all the sidewalks, that has a big city light pole in it. It is like a big rounded triangle. Maybe 5' by 12'. I live in zone 7 and was thinking iris' and pompas grass or some other sort of decorative grass. Any creative ideas or any tips would be greatly appreciated. I want it simple yet pretty with not alot of maintenace. I want it fuller so i dont have as many weeds. Thanks in advance.
Attention gardeners: What flowers to plant in a 25 x 40 flower garden? My husband's father is very sick so he is off to see him every weekend leaving the garden planting to me this year (a first). I want it to be fantastic! We live in Nebraska to help with zones. I love petunias, and am looking for another flower or two to go with them. I really like the "row" look of a bed, not a jungle of flowers. Would appreciate your info as well as sites with pictures! Thanks! Egads! I might be biting off more than I can chew after reading some of these ideas! Details: Full sun, have herbs in pots, perenials are in other garden areas - we live on 12 acres. This annuals-only garden is for mainly for fresh cut bouquets, but you can see it well off the sunroom, so it needs to be attractive. I want the rows - do I still have to do the tall ones in the middle, and if so, how will you see the flowers behind it? Now after asking such a silly question, you can see who you are working with - a very beginning gardener! Thanks for all your ideas!!
