Does anyone have links to well designed garden ideas? I'm looking for links to good photographs, or even video links. I'm NOT interested in flower, or the extremely fancy herb gardens. So links with pictures, good drawings, or videos would be very much appreciated!

Garden design advice please? I was asked to design a small garden, mostly influenced by zen gardens. The site is shaped like a triangle, and there's bamboo on one of the corners. However, the owners don't want sand or gravel because they have dogs, and the site doesn't seem to be apt for a zen garden (there's a Mexican fountain and a cross), so I thought about using some big rocks, tall ferns (similar to lady ferns), santolina and salvia. Santolina mostly to resemble the color of gravel, and salvia because I like the scent and the purple flowers somewhat resemble Japanese cherry blossoms. Do you have any other recommendations? Thanks for the advice.

New to Gardening and really need advice on flower bed design..? I have a new bricked in flower bed that is about 15 feet wide and 3 feet deep. I am in zone 6b and the garden is in mostly full sun for the day. So far I have two Emerald Isle Leyland Cypress (small spirals)and two Golden Euonymus to the rear of the bed. In front I have Hostas and some colorful annuals - petunias, celosia and coleus. I still have a space to the rear (in the center) which I would like to fill in with something really eye-catching that will bring color in the spring and summer, and not die in the winter... I was thinking a Hydrangea, but I don't think it will do well in the full sun - and the winter frost may finish it off... Any and all suggestions will be much appreciated. And if I am on the wrong track with my mix of plants - please let me know while I still have the pots and the receipt! :-) Thanks all...

What could I do with this yard/garden? My BF and I are going to move in with his best friend, and since he doesn't care about the yard, we get to do what we want with it. Here's the house: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=47.664911,-122.060238&spn=0,0.0012&t=h&z=20&layer=c&cbll=47.664842,-122.060133&panoid=kwzyC1aFkU49W6EouxvGmw&cbp=12,226.54,,0,4.34 Go left until the strip of mulch along the ditch ends, that's the end of the area that will "belong" to us. Only, I don't know what to do with this kind of garden. It's very sort of.. sparse and neat looking. (There was a professional gardener taking care of it but there won't be anymore.) And there's not even like a flower bed or anything. That's not the kind of garden I ever had. I'm used to plants kind of overflowing and exploding everywhere, and I like it that way. I don't want to make this yard look weird or anything though, and I'm having trouble picturing what I could do. What if I plant flowers and ferns and various perennials all along that mulch strip and around some of the trees, that wouldn't look weird would it? I don't know what could go wrong, really, but you know.. sometimes there are unexpected complications with any kind of artistic pursuit. And I'm newish to gardening, so my garden design technique doesn't go any further than just to plant stuff and see what happens.
How did the garden plant, antirhinum get its name? The name appears to translate as "against [the] nose".I can think of two possible explanations of this name :- either that it is designed to be pollinated by bumblebees (which are out of sight when in the flower) which means that anyone sniffing it risks a sting; or that the pollen is liable to cause an allergic reaction to hayfever sufferers. Is it either of these or something completely different?
Landscape/garden design client horrors. Convincing client what they want is awful? Three years ago I was hired to landscape a gravelly, weedy front yard zone 6b,into something that would enhance the property/house. Client liked the idea of eliminating the lost-cause "lawn", wanted flowering plants, a sitting area. I designed a plan, installed or had installed most of it (would have been 100% but for her not providing suff.$$) and have done maintenance. AFTER having spent many weeks on design work, plant selection, hardscape materials and having mostly completed everything she began slyly expressing dissatisfaction such as mentioning how she has always loved Hydrangeas (macrophylla), Delphimiums, Oriental Poppies, huge tall billowy things, "being surrounded by things she loves" which included hideous plants (chrome yellow coreopsis and others) which clash with the house both in flower and foliage. The house is a very pale tone of dull yellow green, looks almost gray/green, faces directly South and gets full sun dawn to sunset. It is directly across from the ocean and is windswept. The plants I chose were creeping thyme, fine textured artemesias, echinacias, lavenders, sedums, sempervivums, achillea, liatris, helictotrichon, dwarf Japanese black pine, small horizontal junipers cedars, a few winter-blooming heaths, and others. About 60% of the flowers are in the pale-med red/violet family with others pale-med violet or blue and a few butter yellow. Predominant foliage colors are grayish green, deep green, blue-green with about 10% burgundy foliage. Most are very short plants with talls placed around the perimeter and in a couple other places for accent. The yard is small, 20dx35w. The entire yard is an excellent design and the plants are all perfect with each other and with the house and hardscape. Now she is on again about Hydrangeas, Delphimiums (which get eaten by snails + need to be staked), other very tall plants, brilliant yellow, AND "small" tree (exactly in the center of the lot, too). How do you convince someone that a front yard is about the house, its style/color/shape, about the location, about what can thrive there and look good and not about "being surrounded by things she loves". If she fills the yard up with all these things she loves it will be more hideous than when I began work. How do you cope with a design client who does not understand design or plants? Is it better to drop the client and lose the money than cope with the excruciating frustration?
Landscape Design, Landscape services? Which do I need? I bought a house that hasn't had any landscaping done to it at all. Unless you count overgrown bushes, weeds, and the neighbors bushes encroaching in my yard. I want to get a flower garden started next spring. I have a guy who will cut the bushes and weeds for me. He could do tilling if I need it or i can. But it's the garden design I need help with. I'm not sure what flowers and plants would work best in my yard and I'm not that good at color design and design ideas. But I don't necessarily need someone to do all the planting for me. I just need to know What to plant Where and When. Like a "Paint-By-Numbers" design for my garden. Is this the type of service a landscape designer would do? Or a landscape service? If not them, then who would be able to do something like this? And how much done something like that cost (ballpark)? I'd appreciate information from other gardeners and especially people who work in the landscape business. Thanks. P.S. Please don't suggest I buy a bunch of garden books. I have a bunch. I still can't decide where to begin.

Help with designing a garden for school, please? Hi everyone! Okay, so at my school, we do these design challenge things, and this time we have to design a garden. Well, the winning group gets to actually plant their garden and gets like 20 extra credit points in every class. I really want my group to win, but the thing is, we really don't know anything about gardening, so I was wondering if any of you experienced gardeners could kindly help me out with my questions? 1. What plants would grow successfully? Mainly vegetables, fruits and herbs. (This is around the Detroit, Michigan area, and the area we would have to plant in has partial sunlight [I think that's the correct term]) 2. We're close to a wooded area, so deer are a potential problem...I heard there was a flower you could put around your garden to discourage deer, but I'm not sure what it is. Thanks so much in advance, and I apologize for it being so long! -Katie ♥

Could perennial flowers be considered a type of "groundcover"? I am just trying to clarify for myself the different categories of plants in designing a garden. I pretty much have catergorized as thus: 1. Deciduous Trees a. Lawn Trees b. Flowering Ornamental Trees 2. Evergreen Trees/shrubs 3. Deciduous Shrubs a. Flowering b. Non- flowering 4. Decidous Groundcover a. Flowering b. Nonflowering 5. Evergreen Groundcover 6. Vines I am trying to decide if i can leave it at this or should i make seperate categories for "perennials" like flowers. But I think that flowers are used as "groundcovers" arent they? CAN ANYBODY RECOMMEND ANY CHANGES TO HOW I CLASSIFIED PLANTS FOR DESIGN PURPOSES? I JUST WANTED TO MAKE IT SIMPLIFIED AS POSSIBLE. RECOMMENDATIONS VERY APPRECIATED.

How do I transfer my venus fly trap from a one of those dinky terrarium cups they come in into a terrarium? I get my venus fly traps at Bachman's and it comes in one of those little cups and I got a little green house or terrarium thing that came with the peat moss and stuff and I just want to to know how I should stransfer it from the cup into the nice specially designed terrarium with the peat moss that came with it? Is there a specific way I should do that? Or is it like replanting flowers in your garden? Do you take the plant out like you take a flower out of the box with the dirt surrounding it and fill the hole you made in the ground and pack the dirt around it like you do with flowers? How do I do it?
what do the fountain and the silvery-clear liquid symbolize? There was a frail old lady with silver threadlike hair tending carefully to her flowers in a magnificent garden. This was the most elegant garden I had ever seen. There were somewhat robust hedges demarcating the garden. There were bright yellow flowers that made a circle just inside the hedges. There were unerringly picturesque red, blue and violet flowers arranged in an indefinite manner, a design that she alone could comprehend. And in the middle was the piece de resistance; a shimmering brazen fountain that dispensed silvery-clear liquid. I couldn’t decide if this liquid I saw, even for the split-second that I saw it, was water; it had this ethereality that I could not understand. The picture still flashes in my head, every time the liquid seeming to be something different.

Let: x=width of the garden (ft.) y= length of the garden (ft.) 20 points rewarded! i'm serious, ill ask another question and whoever gets this one right i'll give them the other question even if they type in one letter. so you will get 20 POINTS IF YOU ANSWER THIS QUESTION RIGHT!!
I need help with a math question? Mr. Toil is designing a symmetrical garden with 3 separate plots. A total of 12 orange flowers, 6 red flowers, and 8 yellow flowers are divided equally between garden plots A-1 and A-2. Garden plot B has 2 orange flowers, 3 red flowers, and 11 yellow flowers. Mr. Toil wants the ratio of orange flowers to the total number of flowers to be the same in each garden plot. He wants the ratio of yellow flowers to the total number in plot B to be the same as the ratio of red flowers to the total number in each of the A plots. How many yellow flowers does he have to move from plot B to each of the A plots to achieve his goals?
Can anyone please help me identify these flowers? I live in Oakland, CA, and these "mystery flowers" appeared in my deck garden. I'm including links to pics for easier identification. The first flower started out with white petals, but now they're turning a fuschia color. The second flower now has a white star-shaped five petal design with a yellow center. Does anyone know what these are? http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l56/sleuthgrrl/mysteryflower1.jpg http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l56/sleuthgrrl/mysteryflower2.jpg The first photo actually shows two different mystery plants. The chamomile-like flowers are in the forefront, and there's another mystery vine-like plant in the background.

Landscape design/architecture? I've always been interested in gardens/landscape/flowers/ trees, etc. I want to make designing/beautifying gardens my hobby. I am just starting out and I have a lot to learn... There are 2 parts to my question: --What's the difference between landscape design and landscape architecture? --Do I need to become a plant expert? For example, if I am planning a section of a garden and I want a tree that has beautiful large pink flowers, should I be expected to list the names of all trees that match this description? (i.e. the magnolia tree). Do I need to become knowledgeable of the life cycles of all different types of plants and what specifically needs to be done to take care of them (i.e. know that X plant needs a lot of sunlight and a lot of water, while Y plant grows well in clay soil, etc)? Thanks!
How does someone become an expert on Gardening, get certified and make it a career? I am interested in turning my small time hobby of gardening into a bit of a career. Are there classes, certifications, training that I can take in order to become an expert on plants, trees, etc? I'd like to have a deep knowledge of the various kinds of trees, shrubs, flowers that work in different climates, how to best plant and maintain them, to design landscapes with a variety of well-coordinated plants, etc. Should I try to become a certified arborist? Where do I start exploring this potential new career direction? Thanks.
Help! I need to find a beautiful, affordable garden wedding venue ...? My fiance and I are starting to pull her hair out :p trying to find a decent, affordable (<$1500) outdoor garden venue for a wedding. What we're looking for is something classic and beautiful with plenty of flowers and trees. NOT a golf course, nor a chapel or church building, or a hotel, and definitely not designed or accessorized like it was from the 80s. We've been search for a month and no luck whatsoever!! We're looking for something in the Illinois/Missouri area. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
IF i don`t get this project right i fail for the year? You are to design and draw the landscape for the backyard of your new home. Also, you are to calculate the cost of sodding the backyard. Consider the following in your design and calculations: 1. Your backyard is rectangular with dimensions 60ft by 40ft. 2. There will be an in-ground pool, also rectangular in shape, with dimensions 20feet by 12 feet. You may place this pool anywhere in the yard, but local laws requires that it is at least 3 feet from the edge of the yard. 3. Also there is going to be a circular flower garden. This garden will be 6 feet in radius. Again, you may place this garden anywhere in the yard. 4. The sod should cover all of the yard except,of course the garden and pool areas. The sod costs $9.25 per square foot, and is only sold by the square foot(no fractional part of a square foot). You may need to round up to the nearest foot. 5. The wooden fence you plan to buy should stand around the perimeter of your yard and costs $30 per foot. Just help me or explain it I only could use one piece of computer paper
