Trees And Shrubs Knowledge Base
How to kill shrubs, bushes and trees? We just moved into a house with a huge backyard. Unfortunately, it is overgrown with an endless amount of various shrubs, bushes and trees. We have little kids so need to get rid of them-it's frightening. Is a chain saw at the base sufficient or do you still need to dig up/kill the roots? If so, then how. Are there any other options? Do you have to get rid of trees, shrubs and bushes differently or can you do it the same way?
Best way to clear out shrubs/weeds/trees in backyard? didnt really know how to ask it, but i have half of my property thats basically woods. ex. little trees, shrubs, debris no grass whatsoever, i want to get rid of all of that and make it a yard like the front and sides of my property, what is the best and cheapest way i can do this? im already having a company removing fallen trees and some of the dead ones as well.
What shrubs/smallish trees grow good in clay soil? I'm looking for any okay nice looking smallish trees/shrubs that will grow in clay soil on a slight slope. Can I plant trees or shrubs on a drainage swale embankment? I have a 60 ft easement on my property which includes an approx. 20 ft. drainage swale. The embankment is a nearly flat 40 feet, which already has a Jap Maple tree/shrub and two cherry trees, which look to have been planted after the land was developed. Along the property line, the neighbor has several privacy trees. My local township wasn't very helpful. Is there any reason I can't plant more trees and shrubs?
Does it seem like people just cut trees, shrubs down too much nowadays?? I dont understand the concept of just saying, I am going to just start cutting down trees on my property for the hell of it or butchering the hell out of shrubs, etc. Is this the latest craze or what? when and how did this trend start and why so you think? Thanks for your answers! btw, which area of the world are you?
Are there any trees/shrubs that can cope with waterlogged soil? I want to start landscaping my front yard and was thinking of making a raised garden bed for flowers and such, but I also want to plant out some trees or shrubs(maximum height 3-4 metres or about 9-12 foot) that are able to cope with soil that is waterlogged from living in a low-lying area. Any suggestions as to what may be suitable?
Can others suggest other privacy bearing trees/shrubs for L-shaped back fence area? I planted red tip protinia shrubs 2 years ago and am waiting for them to grow up high like the others already in my back yard. I have new ones on a long L-shaped back part of my yard I need to grow up for privacy and noise reasons. What can I plant in front of my shrubs to grow fast and fill in? I'd like the look of a woodland back yard setting. I'm thinking about english laurel. Any other ideas? Something that can stand wet soil sometimes when the rain water runs off of our back yard.
CATERPILLARS DEFOLIATING TREES SHRUBS AND ROSES in a town where wildlife is limited due to imported flora? HAVE NVQ2 INHORTICULTURE BUT TUTOR GAVE EXTRA INFO - ABORICULTURE ETC. HAVE LOCALLY MANY Trees, Shrubs& Roses BEING STRIPPED OF LEAVES. Believe caterpillars of moths the cause. After 2weeks huge ones devour at leisure. water course altered, dense planting, trees fighting for moisture. Trees not native, low count of species, non fruit trees, town area lack of predators - no food chain. Weather aids pests & diseases no native insects/birds/bats. WHAT HAPPENS NEXT YEAR? If climate/weather is convivial may we have a serious problem? I have a phobia with many legged caterpillars, centipedes, millipedes from my child hood. I have no problem with snakes, tarantullas, rats, mice but I do have a problem with cockroaches. Have spent much of my 53 yrs growing allotments, gardens and more. I truly believe that the idea that to plant trees is a good thing. Now we know that the type of tree must be right to provide the eco system to get the food chain to keep all levels in balance. Educate!
what trees/shrubs can i plant quickly to block view of neighbor? I live on the Gulf Coast of MS. It very rarely, if ever, freezes here. What are the best trees/shrubs and flowers to plant around my house? I live in NW Indiana where the ground is a sandy clay mix. I also have grub worms to get rid of. So I guess I have multiple questions. When should I treate the lawn for grubs, and when/what should I begin landscaping my front/back yard to sell? I am in zone 5. My house is a ranch slab with attached one car garage. I would call it a good (yet very small) starter home. The back yard is long, goes back in distance, but not to wide. it also has a sunkin dirt ring where an above ground pool used to be. I was thinking of creating a bonfire pit in the "pool" area, hoping to make an atractive center piece. I am working on a budget and just want to create curb appeal for when I sell in a year or so.
What are the best trees, shrubs, etc. to screen out a neighbor which wont take 2-3 years to develop.? I live on 1.25 acres and am getting new neighbors soon (new construction). Everyone is spaced out in my neighborhood but my new neighbor built there house so far back that the front door and drive looks out to my backyard and pool. I think they will be great neighbors yet I moved to a country-like setting for the privacy. I need plants that can go up now for a screen. I live in zone 8. Evergreens are my preference for year round screening. I've talked to a few different landscapers but none have given me a good plan for immediate coverage. Nurseries around here (Dallas/Ft. Worth) dont seem to have evergreens large enough. Any ideas? Are there specialty nurseries I should be looking at?We CANNOT have wooden fences in my neighborhood-only wrought iron or chain link.

How did all those trees, shrubs, bushes, flowers and lesser weeds get to the Ark? Noah obviously had them, or their seeds, on-board . . . but how in the world did Giant Sequoias get to the Middle East from California? Experience tells me that most species of plants don't survive total submersion. They need to transpire through their leaves, which kind of needs the presence of an atmosphere. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ksL_7WrhWOc&feature=related

When is the best time to prune small trees and shrubs? My husband has started doing a drastic pruning in our garden. Bought himself a chain saw. I don't think it's the right time for it as most of the greenery are in their element at the moment. but he says i don't know anything about gardening which I know is true but I do have reservations on the timing! he has spoilt our 'wild area'. and also our beautiful hedge [a bit like laurel] is threadbare in places! it was a good thick continuous barrier giving us such a private garden before the sawing!!

There is a house right in back of me and I would very much like to block that view. I was wanting a variety of things, lots of green and a little punch of color here and there. For those who have trained fruit trees and shrubs......? Hi, I've been reading up about training shrubs and fruit trees and some books recommend 'cracking' or 'brotting' branches ie. breaking, but not severing branches, so that when the crack heals over, the branch is in the desired position. But how long does it take for the branches to heal, for example if the branches in question are half an inch in diameter?
Pruning trees and shrubs in spring? The house I am just buying in Maryland has out of control trees and shrubs that need pruning. Can I prune them in the spring without killing them? I need to prune a lot! Are there any tricks or things I need to look out for. I am halfway tempted to just pull them out/cut them down and replant. Especially for the trees, if I don't prune them, a good storm could splinter some of the limbs or bring the whole tree down - they are mostly Bartlett Pears (I think that is the name) and some tall pines - and everyone in the neighborhood is telling me how they split a lot even with pruning - and these haven't been in a while. It looks like some smaller limbs came down last year and there are a few stumps where whole trees must have recently fallen. So, I want to take care of things as soon as I can. Thanks
What plants/shrubs/trees can I plant which are rabbit proof? I wish to advise someone who is trying to cultivate a garden over-run with rabbits. They want to increase their garden stock but do not want to have everything destroyed by the very many rabbits that have unlimited acess to the large garden area.
