What should I plant in my raised garden if I don't care for most vegetables? My wife and I have begun "prepping" and are about to start a raised garden in the spring. I love most every fruit, but when it comes to veggies, I'm a natural born carnivore. I do eat corn, lettuce, b.e. peas, black beans, onions, raw carrots, tomatoes (w/ salt), potatoes, yams... But ask me to eat anything green???? Green beans, cabbage, turnips, collard greens, etc... and it just isn't happening. What would you recommend that we plant in our new garden so that the food is actually enjoyed (and enjoyable to grow). When to plant seeds in SE Wisconsin? I used to live in a different part of the states, so I'm not sure when I should start my seeds indoors so they are ready to transplant when the weather is best. I live in Southeast Wisconsin. We can have freak snow storms in April, out of the blue. I bought the seeds, starter soil, and growing tray. I'm looking to plant some tomatoes (roma and cherry), sugar snap peas, zucchini, and swiss chard. They're going to be transplanted into 5+ gallon pots (alas, I can't have a real garden, just a container garden). I want them to be strong and healthy when they go outside, but don't want them to stay indoors for too long. I have a sunny window for them, but sunlight through glass =/= sunlight outdoors. Its still March, but I can't wait until I have a producing 'garden' again. There is nothing like a delicious cherry tomato fresh off the vine and still warm from the sun.
Indoor kitchen herb garden help? I love fresh herbs and have an outdoor kitchen herb garden in the spring and summer each year. So I've become spoiled and no longer want to use dried, store bought herbs. This year I decided to make one indoors. I planted seeds of common kitchen herbs (parsley, rosemary, marjoram, etc) per seed package directions. They are in small pots on my kitchen counter with a grow light over them. I watered them thoroughly two days ago when I planted the seeds and assume I should water them a bit each day. My questions: How long should it take before something green peeps out? Should I cover the pots with plastic wrap as suggested on one website to keep in moisture and heat? Anything else I should be doing. Thanks for any help. What to plant in the garden next? I am in the SF Bay Area of California. I can start seeds inside under grow lights. What should I be getting ready to plant in my garden next, for fall? When should I start the seeds/plant the plants?
I live in Ohio and we think we planted the seeds in our garden too deep. Will things still come up? We planted corn, watermelon, peas, peppers, carrots... This is our first garden and we planted everything about 6 or 7 inches deep. It has been planted for about 3-4 weeks and only a few little sprouts.
Can I plant a garden in just plain dirt? Im a beginner in gardening, and Im only 14, so I cant really go in a car and drive to the store to get some soil. So is it possible to plant things such as watermelons, apples trees, flowers, etc. in just plain dirt? If so, how deep should I plant the seeds, and how many times a day should I water it, and how much water? Also, I get my seeds from the actual fruti, no package. One more thing: Where do I put the mulch?
