Organic Garden Seeds Knowledge Base
I want to start a organic garden this summer. HELP?!?!?!? I live in Saint Paul Minnesota, I was thinking about doing raised beds because the soil at our house is is clay based. I need help finding everything to start this garden, soil, seeds, etc. I have found a few websites that have organic seeds but most of them you have to buy the seeds in bulk. I need help on what I can grow in this climate. I would love to have strawberries! <3 Anything helps! Thanks!
Organic garden? I posted an earlier thread about purchasing a juicer, and growing my own garden in the spring. Many people who responded, said that it would be best to grow organic fruits and veggies. I would love to do this, but I dont think I know how. I assumed that if I planted seeds in my yard, and took care of them properly, than they would grow into organic produce. I assume this because I wont use chemicals or pesticides. Am I right, or is there something special needed to grow organic foods?
How do I start the perfect organic garden? I want a decent size organic garden. I would like a lot of tomatoes, green beans, herbs, zuccine, eggplant, squash, lettuces, peppers, and corn. When do I start? Can I start them from seeds now? What can I plant to keep pests away? Any advise would be great.
Does anyone know where there is an organic gardening center in NJ? We are starting a new garden and wish to keep organic as much as possible. We haven't found much at our local garden center or large retailers for items such as compost or organic seeds or seedlings. We live in Metuchen, but are willing to travel if there is a store that matches our needs. Thank you.
Does anyone have an organic garden? I want an organic garden. I am just starting out. Does anyone have any tips - what to read, certain veggies, fruit and herbs to grow and why, where to purchase the seeds or the plant, ect.....?
what to do for my organic herb garden? so i want it to be completely organic , the seeds are organic and they are in the budding stage but i noticed today that they are attracting bugs , are their organic pesticides , what are my options besides ladybugs to repel bugs.
Having an organic garden?!? I want to start my own organic garden, but where should I plant my organic seeds? Probably not in my actual land, since there could be chemicals and pesticides already existing in the soil. Should I just get big planting bins, and plant herbs and lettuces, and maybe some veggies? Or will there not be enough space for a proper root system to form?
What kind of plants and fertilisers should I use for an organic medical garden? I know I want to grow peppermint(for the oil) and aloe vera(for the gel) What else should I use. I want to all be organic and the fertiliser needs to be organic too, Do you know a good fertiliser? What plants should I grow? (I need some for colds and headaches) Where can I buy seeds? and how should I care for my garden? Can I leave it outside, water it everyday and use fertilizer and let nature do the rest?
To plant an herb garden is it better to get seeds or the plants already started? I want to do the herbs in containers too. Should I get the plants already started and plant them in the pots, or should I get seeds and plant them in the pots? What about those herb growing kits that come with the seeds that are in these little peat moss pellets? Also, if I want organic herbs does that mean I need to buy organic herb seed or organic herb plant, or will it be organic either way as long as I'm not using chemicals? Thanks! Obviously inexperienced over here...
Good way to keep cats out of the garden? What can you do to keep cats from using the garden for a litter box...ugghhh Also looking for the best place to order organic seeds? any other garden tips are great!!!
What is the best material/method to sow seeds? I used Jiffy Peat Pellets and my seeds sprouted beautifully. The day before I wanted to plant them in the garden I read that sometimes they contain chemicals to boost performance. Not good for an organic garden, obviously. How else can I sow seeds without planting them in the ground first?
Do Ferry Morse flower seeds (Morning Glories) have a chemical coating? I'm trying to have a complete organic garden, and I have a few Ferry Morse brand seeds. But I know that some brands put chemicals on their Morning Glory seeds because some people use them as drugs (?). "There have been reports that commercially available packets of morning glory seeds from some distributors are coated with fungicides or other chemicals to increase shelf life or discourage the practice of eating them. Seeds from plants grown in one's own garden will be safe as long as you do not spray them with insecticides. " I just didn't want to put seeds into my garden with chemicals that could possibly harm other vegetables or flowers. THANKS!
I want to grow organic potatoes in a container garden? All of the books I have read, say that you MUST use certified seed potatoes. Is there any reason I shouldn't seed out some of the organic fingerling potatoes I already have? I can understand not using regular storebought potatoes, but shouldn't organic be okay? Same question about sweet potatoes. Any tips or advice will be appreciated!
Is it possible to over-fertilize a vegetable garden? I admit, I didn't read the packaging and I feel that was a mistake. I spread generous amounts of organic fertilizer over my vegetable garden before the seeds germinated. I've noticed plants have sprouted in areas of less-thick fertilizer. I wonder if the other seeds just haven't come up through the thickness or could the organic fertilizer have killed the seeds.
Hello, I am trying grow an organic garden? I dislike go to whole market and purchase expensive veggie purchase , so a boy gave me Great idea saying "you really don't have go since you are vegetrian you will need a lot of veggie and fruits" "what about grow your own garden?" uh?! GOOD IDEA! I am into both Vegetrian / Organic and would like to grow my own garden. But I need an advice from ya'll who did the growing of your own GARDEN in YOUR YARD, is it as easy you think? Did flies ,worms, or Bugs often get into them ? what the special thing s I must buy to keep them off and to keep other human beings from stealing? How often do you have to water them? Please do tell your story and detailed questions, if you wanna.. You can tell me the name link of website where i can get packaged seeds (growth) from?
How often to water little veggie garden? I LOVE to make my own salsa and thought it would be cheaper and better to plant my own organic garden of hot peppers. Anyway, most seeds I received from family and some I bought at the store and made sure the package said organic seeds. Right now, a few of each seeds are planted in 4 inch clay pots. I did that because I live in a townhouse and have no real backyard or gardening area. As of now, I'm watering them at night because that's when my kids are asleep and aren't trying to try and 'help' by pouring more water on my seeds. I need to know what time of day is best to water and how often to water? Thanks for your help.
GMO vegtable garden seed? I am starting a larger garden this year and want to be as close to organic has possible. But, I have notice the different seeds organic, heirloom, hybrid etc. I am interested in the heat-resistant variety of seeds. Does this mean the seeds are genetically modified if they are not organic and heat resistant? I live in zone 8 and need heat resistant plants because of the dry weather.
How often should I water seeds in a vegetable garden? A few weeks ago I planted some green bean seeds in a small raised bed vegetable garden. Only 2 seeds sprouted out of 2 decent size rows. I am a novice gardener and went by the advice of the employee at a local garden center to mix in some mushroom compost into my top soil...and that was it. I was told that I wouldn't need to water much...so I didn't. I don't know what could have inhibited the seeds from sprouting. Perhaps they weren't good seeds? Maybe my soil was too dry? It seemed to drain well when I watered...but also appeared to have a dry crackly surface...could the soil have not been prepared enough? I went back to the garden center and bought some organic compost...they said it would drain better because it was more leafy. I reworked all of the soil, even digging up my tomato and pepper plants...setting them aside, and reworking that soil. After replanting them...along with my new green bean seeds...I watered them really well. Should I continue to water my seeds good until they sprout? Or should I just water occasionally? I could really use some tips on how to make it do as good as it can. I am so new at this. (it gets a lot of sun)
Best use of of $100 in my organic vegetable garden? The best answer to this question will be the most insightful one. I'd like to improve my suburban, California garden to be productive, organic and sustainable. What I'm really asking in this question is what sort of investments would give me the most bang for my buck, particularly in the long term. The suggestions could be for plants, tools, infrastructure, assistance, and so on. What I want out of my garden: Food (fruits, veggies) Exercise Satisfaction Something to look at besides a flat, weedy, square back yard What I already have to put into my garden: A 50-foot square back yard, of which about a third has been cleared of weeds and the process of soil improvement begun. Five existing fruit trees Various seeds, already saved or otherwise acquired A library card and an Internet connection A gardening staff of one small woman (me) Basic tools, including two compost bins
Organic veggies: no chances for survival? I planted peppers, eggplants and a nice array of other veggies and spent over 200$ worth of organic seeds and equipment. Over the course of two days, all the plants have holes in them and I think I saw flea beetles jumping on them. So I made a mixture of garlic, oil, cayenne pepper and a tsp of soap detergent and it seemed to work, but today the bugs are back and my plants are more dead than alive! My neighbors say to use ''Sevin'' but what is the purpose of organic gardening if I must resort to chemicals! I am to my wit's end and might end up buying it since if they die I will end up buying veggies that are of course sprayed with chemicals in the first place.. oh I am so mad! I think organic gardening is almost impossible today with all these hungry pests around.. years ago I was able to grow stuff with no chemicals, I guess those days are over! Any other ideas or must i go the chemical route? Also, products as Sevin do they need to be re-sprayed after it rains? it rains almost every day here! I read the label of Sevin and was shocked on how you must change your clothes, wear protective eye wear and a hat to protect yourself! Its ridiculous and wonder how people sane of mind would use that!

Growing organic vegetables...HELP? Alright so I want to start growing my own fruits and vegetables. There's one problem though. I don't anything about gardening!! lol which could prove to be more than one problem. I have a few seeds right now. They are: -Turnips -Cauliflower -Pumpkin -Lettuce -Carrot -Broccoli These are the vegetable seeds that I found around the house. My mom planned on planting them but she's been busy. She told me to give it a whirl. I told her that I could plant them just without her help. haha! though she's never planted vegetables before herself. She's more into flowers. I mention in my question that I want an organic garden. I do plan on consuming these and I want them to be organic. So does it matter if my seeds are organic or not? Could I just grow them to be organic? even if the seeds may not be organic? I was thinking about planting the Carrot seeds. Is this a wise choice? Should I plant another seed? Also how do I plant carrots? how do I care for them? What does thinning the carrots mean? It's obvious that I am an absolute novice but I am willing to learn. So please any help is required!!
How do I get rid of thorny weeds in my garden? We put cow manure on our garden 3 yrs ago. Since then we have had these redlike thorny weeds in our garden. I have hoed and cut them out and disposed of them in the burn barrel to eliminate the seeding but they still come back. What can I do that is organic to rid the garden of them? Please organic not chemicals. Please organic not chemicals.
How do I start a garden? I have nothing but a bunch of seeds. I want to have a vegetable garden. What tools do I need and how do I prepare the yard? I want to go as organic as possible. The inexpensive route too please.
How do I keep cats out of my garden? I live in a town that is full of stray cats and outdoor cats. And my neighbors adopt cats for the Humane Society, so there are even more right around our property. We have a veggie garden, and I want to put in a second one. The trouble is, these cats all seem to think my garden is a toilet, so it is always full of cat poop. Is there any way to keep them out of the garden? Preferably something that doesn't involve chemicals (the garden is entirely organic; the seeds aren't even treated)? I'm at my wits' end with these critters.

what is good a tomato specific organic fertilizer that I can buy? I started a veggie garden. I bought 8 small tomato plants that are already in the ground doing good. I also grew about a dozen plants from seeds that are doing good as well ready for transplanting into the ground in about 1 more week. I cannot seem to find a tomato specific organic fertilizer with the good NPK ratio. Any recommendations? I am located in Southern Nevada

Is the Government Trying to Criminalize Backyard Gardening and Organic Farming? According to HR875 and S425 Oraganic Farmers and Backyard Gardeners will have to use the same genetically modified seeds and spray the same Corporate back pesticides as the corporate farming conglomerates if they wish to grow food... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zP2teJMu... Does Obama support this, will he sign the bill ??? .
How to start a Vegetable Garden? Hey! I plan on starting a vegetable garden soon, I've never done any gardening before. Would an experience gardener like to offer some advice? I've got a few basic questions! 1) Do you test pH levels of the dirt in your garden? If so, can you have different pH levels in each row of plants? 2) I read that you can't plant strawberries close to peppers because they spread diseases. Have you tried this before? Is it better to have 2 gardens? 3) What do I need to do to the soil beforehand? Obviously I need to loosen it up a bit, maybe get some nice healthy dirt in there. Make it moist. Anything else? 4) What tools should I buy to start off with? I'm thinking a shovel, a trowel, some gloves, and a cultivator.Would you suggest anything else? 5) I know I'm a bit late on the spring season. What are good items to plant at this time? (I live in Tallahassee, FL) I would really like peppers, strawberries, spinach, and butternut squash (or pumpkin). Possibly blueberries or raspberries. Are these ok to plant at this time of the year? 6) Where is a good, local, informative place to shop for plants, seeds, tools, etc? I'd like an organic garden. Any other advice you'd like to offer? Thanks a bunch for any help!!! I really appreciate it!!! Any other advice???
Vietnamese watermelon growing way big? organic garden: a friend brought me some watermelon seeds from vietnam. in vietnem they are in market small compared to what one sees in markets here. i live in the desert and started a small plot about 3 feet down and 6 around. ther was one that was very big at first and was told by him to pick it because it is three times what thay are vietnam. it was still not ripe. so i am letting the the rest do their thing a will wait. i used plenty of mule poop...lots to regenerate a lifeless desert ground. they are about 5 times bigger than what at the markets in vietnam and they are still growng. what is going on?
What's the best way to start my own kitchen garden? I don;t know anybody who's doing it so there's no way for me to get seeds from them. What's the most economic way to start off and stay organic? I'm having trouble with the composts and all that.. is that really necessary.. plus if I move to an apartment, what are some plants that are good in pots? They better be perennials... I live in Vancouver hope that helps.
Does anyone know where I could get free Seeds in or sent to Florida? My husband and I both work and still cannot pay bills, never mind feed our family of 4, yet because we both work we cannot get help from any government agency. I need to start a garden. Ive been saving scraps from everywhere and composting because we cannot afford fertilizer but we dont have any seeds to plant. We live in Florida so the growing season is soon and Ive come up empty handed on search engines. Any help will be appreciated. Also any tips on organic gardening, Im a first-timer. Thanks.
Help with organic gardening? 'm really interested in growing organic vegetables and herbs but im not really sure where to start. I don't want to plant in the ground of my backyard, I'd rather have a large rectangular type holder above ground. The only thing is is that I don't really know if the potting soil you buy at the store is truly organic. Also, I am unsure of where i can buy quality seeds. Its not practical for me to buy them online. I'm looking to plant a variety of vegetables and herbs. I forgot to mention i have 4 dogs... if that make any difference.
organic pepper hybrid cost? i have a garden and i bought all my seeds from a catolog and there all hybrids i want all of the things i grow to be organic i will have so many peppers this year so im going to sell them how much should i sell them for?
Advice for an organic newbie veggie gardener in Northern NJ? I will be starting my first ever veggie garden. I need it to be both 100% organic and easy to maintain because my time is super limited (I had my first baby in December 2006.) I have tons of squirrels and quite a few trees so location is also an issue. Should I do a raised bed and “fence it in” with chicken wire? How much area will I need? Would planting marigolds around the garden help defer bugs? I would like to plant tomatoes, zucchinis, peppers, carrots, eggplants, cucumbers, string beans, lettuces and some herbs. Any suggestions on homerun varieties? Also, how many plants of each should I plant? I will only need veggies for my husband, my son and myself this summer but I can give extras to relatives and neighbors. Should I start from seeds or plants? Who is a reputable company to order from? Lastly, I will need to prepare the soil but I am not sure what to use. I don't have any compost and I worry about using cow manure because my son is so young. Any suggestions?
Will I be able to re-seed my Thai dragon peppers from the plants I grow? I am planting a garden next year. In it, I will have Thai dragon peppers, Pumpkins, and other types of things. The question is whether I will be able to re plant a garden the following year from the seeds collected from the initial plants. The seeds are non treated, organic. I know that most commercial seeds are sterile, meaning that their offspring won't have viable seeds. Do pumpkin and pepper seed producers do this as well?
Organic Herbs? I want to have an organic herb garden. But I have waited to laong to start from seed. If I purchase herb seedlings that have been lightly sprayed is that ok? does the pesticide wash off? can I just prune off and dispose of the shoots that have been sprayed?
Can I plant seeds from fruits and veggies purchased at the grocery store? Okay, so I've been looking at seed catalogs and planning my garden for next year. Potatos are pretty expensive, about $18 a set for the fingerlings I want. However, the same fingerlings sold for eating are only about $8 a sack at Costco. So here's what I'm wondering ... couldn't I buy the fingerlings from Costco, let them start growing eyes, and then plant those? Is there any reason why I can't plant any seeds obtained from organic fruits and veggies? Okay, I know that if I grow an apple tree or pear tree from seed, I'm going to get a surprise tree with fruit unlike the fruit I got the seed from, but in general, can I plant potatoes from the store? What about taking the seeds out of peppers, tomatoes, squash, etc? Anyone know? I'm not even super concerned with it coming from an organic fruit or veggie, as long as I grow it organic on my end. Part of the reason why I garden is to save money on food, and I know I'll get a lot more in harvest than what I spend on seed, but if I can cut my costs on seed it sure would help.
Strawberry seeds recommendations? I have never grown strawberries before. I don't have a good yard to put in a garden (too shady) so I am going to grow some veggies and such in pots and hanging baskets. Does anyone have any recommendations for a brand/type of seeds that don't need a lot of space, yet produce a good quantity/quality of berries? Preferably organic, and one that doesn't need full sun. Thanks for your help!
How can I get my parakeets to eat fresh foods? I have two parakeets who aren't the least bit hand tamed, so any like I have read of pretending you eat it and then offereing it to them will not work. Anyway, I have tried several times with a lot of different foods I tried mixing bits with their seed (I'll get to that in a second) but they eat around it, I have tried to leave the food in the dish all day, but they just walk/poop on it, and I have tried only offering fresh food without seed and they just screamed the whole day. Foods I have tried are Banana, fresh peach, frozen strawberries (thawed), cherries (sans pit), mashed blueberries, seedless grape, garden fresh organic corn (I know it's garden fresh and pesticide free because we grow it) (off the cob), canned and fresh green beans, canned peas, peanut butter, graham crackers, boiled cabbage, crushed saltines, bits of boiled chicken (cooled). I said I'd get back to the seed thing, I am switching them to pellets as soon as possible, what brand/style do you reccomend? cont. I have been wanting to, but I am scared of low quality pellets that claim to be complete, but may not be, what kind do you use and reccomend, Currently, I am supplimenting their seed with vitamin drops because I don't have pellets and they won't eat fresh foods, how can I change this? Also, so I HAVE to sepreate them to finger train them? I bought my first parakeet, Riko, last year and he seemed lonely even though I spent hours with him, trying to train him, so I bought him a buddy, who WAS named Lola, but Lola is now Tiger because she's really a he. Then Riko died of the flu and thankfully Tiger didn't catch it, but then Tiger was depressed and lonely and so I bought him a friend named Jade, which is the two I have who won't eat fresh food. I don't want to seperate them, but I guess I will if it's the ONLY way to do it.
gardening for beginers, how can i protect my new veg patch from the bugs, in a safe way as i have young kids? With my little boy we have just dug and composted an area in the garden for veg/fruit. I wanted to do this to show them how to grow things for themselves when they are older. Problem is i havnt a clue really, i have put a mesh fence around it to stop the dog or cats toileting. What can i do about creepy crawlies. We have lettuce and carrot seeds, i have 4 strawberry plants and 2 tom plants on my kitchen window. They are getting a bit big now should they go in the garden. How do i protect everything in a organic/ safe way ie no chemicals pellets etc. Thanks for any help.
Planting seeds indoors (Zone 9a - Houston TX)? Hello all, I've seen so much about planting seeds indoors, it seems the cost is way to expensive to even try it (just get the transplants). The problem is I really don't want transplants this year, but I really don't wanna spend crazy amounts of money on getting seeds started. From what I've read I need grow lights, mats, seed starting mix, organic containers to put them in. So my first thought is....what did people do thousands and millions of years (or maybe even my grandpa's generation) ago before gardening became "commercial"? My question is... Do I really need a heated mat, lights, blah, blah blah. I've read a little about putting seeds on top of the fridge (which is waaaay cheaper than the mats and lights!) So please let me know! Do I need all the expensive stuff from burpee.com or is there old fashioned, tried and true ways I can get my seeds going? BTW - I a container gardener this year :) Thanks! So for seeds all I need is miracle gro potting soil and not some seed starting mix???
Counter top composting bin? We live in a small older apartment complex. Every apartment has a small area for a individual garden right outside. Last year we moved in too late for me to start a garden, and all I ended up growing was my potted tomatoes and my kitchen herbs. This year, I definitely want to do a organic garden. I even have some seeds planted, and sprouting indoors right now. We composted at my parents house, so I know how doing a big pile works. But I have to do it on a much smaller scale here. I bought a small kitchen counter top crock composting bin today that has the carbon filter for reducing odors, but I'm not thinking it will be as good as outdoors. I've never heard of or used one of these before. And I don't want to be a bad neighbor with a large compost pile right outside, but I would like to do it. Any suggestions for composting in a small apartment area? Has anyone used one of these kitchen compost bins, and if so how did it work? Also, I don't want to buy store bought soil. I feel better knowing what's going into my garden. If I'm growing it, I want it to be he healthiest it can be,
What's a good way to sterilize soil organically? I want to expand my garden next year, but this year I had so many weeds come up among the tomatoes and cucumbers that they got smothered. They're actually good plants (lambs' quarters), but they grow everywhere, whether I want them or not! Is there an organic soil treatment I can apply in the spring to kill any seeds in the earth, that won't hurt the other plants when I put them in the ground? Thanks!
Pro-Mix Organic good? http://www.premierhort.com/eProMix/Gardening/fGardening.htm I read that it can be used for vegetable gardens and starting seeds? Is this true? And is that god for seed starting/vegetale gardens?
I froze my pumpkin seeds from my large farm bought pumpkin last year...? Will they sprout in a few weeks? I froze them in October on the day I carved the pumpkin. I have heard so many mixed things that i'm uncertain what is factual. But today I decided I would plant them in my garden just to see what would happen. I live in Texas and we are past our last freeze now and I sowed in the pumpkin seeds this afternoon. But prior to sowing I let them thaw out naturally and did not force the thawing. I also let them semi dry between paper towels for 2 days before planting them. Will they sprout in a few weeks? What is the likely hood? I have heard mixed things that yes they will and no they may not. But I do have a nice raised garden bed with real rich soil and organic compost manure. Thanks for the help!
My first garden help? So I am planting my first garden and i have no idea what im doing haha. how to increase blooms in the garden? Hello. I have planted lots of new garden plants - mostly grown from bulbs or seed planted last autumn/ this spring. I have lots of leaves but a relatively poor show in blooms. I'll get one flower, then another but never lots at the same time. Any ideas? There are anemones, aquilegia (some of which is ok), cosmos, stardust, should be some freesias and love in the mist at some point and there were other bulbs I can't remember (or identify now cos the lollypop identifiers disappeared). Some plants (irises I think) haven't flowered at all... Will some of the perennials do better next year? I try to keep things organic... Thanks for any help. I was pretty careful where I put the bulbs but the garden's a bit funny in terms of light. It's not dark as such - but there are lots of trees surrounding it which have gone manic with all the rain!
I'm starting a garden and need advice.? I live in NC and have red clay. So, I was advice to till the yard but, I don't have the equipment and strength to break up the soil. I wanted to put down cardboard and purchase a heep of blackgold(soil) from the county. I wanted to plant seeds of corn, squash and zucchini. Also, plant the live plants of sweet potato. I was going to pot mint leaves, basil and tomatoes. I was advice that I should put sand in the area were I am planting sweet potatoes. My backyard gets a lot of sun (8-10 hours in the summer.) Should I put fertilizer down? I want to grow organic. How could I prevent bugs, rabbits, snakes? I don't think I have a deer problem since I live in a subdivision. Should I put mulch down? Can I use the same cardboard concept with my flower bed or should I use newspaper? I tried a garden last year and wasted a lot money. So, I really need great advice. Thanks in advance. I forgot to ask. When should I put the seeds and plants in the soil? I always thought april. Should I let the cardboard sit in the ground for about 2 weeks before I place the seeds and plants down? I forgot to ask. When should I put the seeds and plants in the soil? I always thought april. Should I let the cardboard sit in the ground for about 2 weeks before I place the seeds and plants down?
My vegetable garden needs help?!?!? Ok this is my first ever vegetable garden and at the moment things have just gone from bad to worse and I have no idea what to do about it. My soil was mostly clay so I conditioned in with mushroom compost and water crystals like suggested and then I planted all my veggies. Less than a week on 3 out of 4 of my crops look to be heading down hill at a rapid rate. For starter my broccoli plant has little whit bugs all over it and in places small silver patches. There are is what looks like grey eggs on the under side of leaves and its getting more and more wholes by the hour. My Celery which is at the seeding stage seems to be turning a yellowy colour. And finally my capsicum/pepper plants are getting holes and look slightly 'cinged' on the tips of my leaves put at this point I cant Identify a pest. If at all ppossibleI would like to find organic sSolutionsand I am hesitant to put pesticides on plants I intend to eat one day, god willing. My tomato plant seems to be doing the best of all of them but I am slightly concerned and there is now a great deal of bull ants in my garden and I ddon'tknow why. Please help or my garden may be dead my the weeks end.
Fluffy textured tomatoes? I grow my tomatoes outside East of England in a semi-shaded very sheltered organic garden for several years I grew perfect tomatoes in their masses. However my seeds failed this year through lack of attention (over watered) so I bought the plants to save time I usually start them earlier another mistake. I had red ones this time last year they had fluffy texture I have a green house should I gently dig them up now and transplant there to ripen off? My tomatoes are still green I had a couple of red ones that were perfect and a couple that were fluffy. The last couple of years have been lacking sun is this the cause of fluffy texture? I don't care for green tomatoes but I may have to eat some green ones *groans*. Chuckney?? *gags* Thanks for the WIZARD!! TIN IDEA I've got some of that. A bloody bugger I didn't think of that earlier when I suggested reflective dangling objects in my garden once here on Yahoo I got laughed at.
Canning information please!? Along with some friends, I am planting an organic garden. We plan for it to be huge. I am trying to find out some good information on the following: 1) Canning (how to, dangers, expense, good links, cheap ideas) 2) Extracting seeds from my plants, to plant them again in years to come. (Also storing ideas, good links, cheap ideas) 3) Drying, I plan on planting tons O beans. I'd like to know the best way to get them so I can store them in a container on my counter. (to make them look like the bags of beans from the store) Again, good weblinks or cheap ideas. 4) If anyone has any other useful hints of food preservation, please let me know. Any information would be welcome. So all my organic gardening, food preserving knowledge master, hippie friends, send me an answer please! Thanks!!! I should mention. We are using an organic heirloom seed company for our garden. So I am not sure if that would make it easier to yeild seeds for replant in the future?
Are there any invididuals whom sincerely promote search of intelligence, wisdom and free thought? want to experience everything. I want to read the oldest books in their original texts and language. I want to compose opera and other music on the instruments of the "masters" I want to use the brushes and easels of those like Michangelo. To be able to grow organic gardens in the various countries and growing and utilizing the best of the veggies and fruits and making all the dishes... to use the clays of the countries and making the utensils on which the meals to be eaten... to use and learn how to make the fabrics of the countries and make a wardrobe... and to learn the language and sing and compose with instruments I made and will play on and sing with... To write poety and a book or two in that language......
Anyone else having problems with peas not growing this year? Our garden is doing great, except the peas have been planted three times and they are not coming up. I have them in a different location from last year, where corn and beans were the summers before. We tried two different brands of seeds too. We live in the Thumb of Michigan, and have great, fertile loamy soil, and garden using organic practices. I have never had a hard time growing peas before, they are usually so tall we have to trellis them on wire fencing that is 5 feet tall. Any suggestions? Its been a moderate spring/early summer with average 78 temperature, and good steady rain, but not enough to waterlog. Everything else is doing well.
When gardening, is compost and manure the same as mulch? I have added compost and mulch in the spring to the garden. Do I still need to mulch, or is this the same thing? I have an existing garden and I add seeds and annuls to it as well. I am wondering if I should also fertilize it with Scotts or Miracle Grow, but I want to stay organic and I am confused about these fertilizers? I believe they are not organic. I am growing vegetables and flowers in the same bed and I would like to use the fertilizers on the flowers only as my vegetables are organic, but how can I fertilize one and not fertilize the other? Or is it best to stick to only compost and manure that is organic? Is it worth it to use the Miracle Grow or the Scotts, or should I not because it will mix in with the vegetables? Please help!
When planting potatoes does the trench system allow more growth than say boring a hole big enough for the seed? I heard where the more soil dug out can get necessary bacteria destroyed when the sunlight hits it, that's why farmed land is dead and needs oil dependant/based fertiliser on it to grow anything. My garden is organic and I grow fairly successfully each year but I have a small part shady garden so I would not think it matters much about digging trenches I grow several but if I could max' them would be good. I use home-made compost and get taters the size of yore head (nearly). The question is........Dig or Not? Any thoughts from experience? I just wondered if they need a dug space to grow into.
Ant problem...? I have an ant problem in my garden.their not eating the plants that were already established, only the one's that were started from seed outside. I have lost all my bush beans, all of them had ant larva in them and two of my peas were the same and my zucchini. what can I do to get them out of my garden. I have a square foot garden with good organic soil. Help!!! Ok, this is what happened. all my seeds were starting to sprout, my peas were doing great. well I planted 9 bean bushes, only one was sprouting after a few days it stoped growing so I dug all of them up. The beans that were planted looked rotten and had larva in them, the same with 2 of my peas and zucchini, those were all seeds... the plants that started as plants are fine, at least they look really good and are growing well... what ever the problem is can it be fixed? are they going to eat more of my seed started sprouts?
Growing Soybeans? I am wanting to plant soybeans in my garden this year. I'm wondering if I buy soybeans that are organic from the health food store, will they grow more soybean plants? Or do I need to plant a certain type of soybean? If I do, where can I buy seeds in bulk, about 2 to 5 lbs, instead of in small packets?
Growing your own veggies... ? I have grown my own veggies for many years, but now that we are in the worse recorded drought and with water restrictions as they are, I have cut back on what I grow severely...Now to the question...If I was still growing all my seasonal veggies, would I be using more or less water than commercial growers, considering I use mulch heavily to retain water in the soil...I also don't have to transport them anywhere and I don't have to keep them in a false enviroment to keep them fit for sale... The most important thing is I use no chemicals other than what is certified organic, and my produce are all grown from seed and are either certified organic or heirloom, so no hybrids in my garden... My tucker tastes the way my grandparents enjoyed theirs, not like the insipid, tough, supermarket bred produce... What are your thoughts on this regardless of country, but please mention where you live as many people are not in my situation... Cheers... Just let you know, I am not allowed by Law to use any drip system, only watering cans (anytime) and a hand held hose fitted with water reducing head for 1 1/2 hours twice a week... I cannot recycle my grey water to my garden as yet...
How to grow vegetables from seed? My tomato plants are thriving. My basil is almost two feet tall. Now how the heck do you grow other stuff? Since we have a long growing season in so cal, and the seed packets were only 11 cents each, I decided to get two, for the hell of it. I got carrots and "table queen" acorn squash... what do I do with the seeds before planting? and how deep do I plant them? how much do I water? spacing? I have around 5 feet of length available for the carrots, and a wide u-shaped area thats around 10 feet long by 4 feet for the squash. I have organic "vegetable" soil stuff, and Ive been adding kitchen scraps to my garden, too. I need tips, people. By the way, I'm way new to all of this, so please describe methods- this is my first garden.
I absolutely love this arguement for religion, it's brilliant in it's stupidity.? "All you have to do is look around: Check out the trees and all the flowers you might pass by everyday without a thought as to where they came from. Or maybe, check out a new baby...for sure you'll realize that someone far greater than any of us is responsible for our world and everything in it." (and now my thoughts and question) Ok, I see a lot of trees, trees come from seeds which come from other trees which come from smaller trees which come from organic reactions in the soil hundreds of thousands of years ago, not that hard minus the scientific details. Flowers are pretty similar. Babies come from sex because again there is a biological reaction occuring. If god put adam and eve here why don't babies just "POOF" appear in our garden. They say "the mountain is beautiful so god must have made it but mountains don't . That's bloody ridiculous and excruciating to hear. How can people attend school and then still continue to think this way. Can anybody answer me these things? KJ Long I would like to say to you, yes it makes a lot of sense. Even if it made no sense at all that would only make the theory exactly equal to the god shat us upon the void of space and crafted us out of mud and the world rejoiced theory. Earth born out of reproduction... Nobody said that. I don't know why I even argue their only comeback is equal to "I know you are but what am I" My invisible sky diety done said so, so ya'lls just stoooopid!" wb warnerb very good answer. You rejected the opportunity to huff and puff and give some ridiculous answer like "I'll pray for you" You read the questions and answered rationally despite that I attempted to be and rude and nasty as I could. You still didn't fight for religion and and you actually did point out that I used the term very broadly. It's mainly christianity I point a finger at but islam has it's share of nutbags as well. The others tend to be less irritating and not as harmful over all. Point was that you actually made a point that was farily articulate and reasonably rational. And you parcifiquat or whatever your name is. I didn't even make the slightest attempt at proper grammar. I couldn't care less if I put a period in the right place on yahoo answers. Leave it to an English Nazi to completely disregard the question asked and pick grammar discrepancies to attempt to discredit the point.
Gardening Help? Hi. (: I'm just fairly new to gardening and I have a few questions before I go planting without knowing a few basic things... 1. What are nutrients essential for all kinds of plants? I know the three basics: sunlight, water and soil, but are there any hidden, organic materials you can add to better keep the plant sustained? 2. How deep the seeds should be in the soil? I might plant it too deep that it won't shoot up the soil or too high that they won't survive the heat at their "growing stages". :\ 3. What are good gardening websites, magazines, publications, etc. I can go to that has a lot to say about everything gardening? 4. What are good protection for plants without resorting to pesticides from bugs? Also, during weekends, I'm idle and away from my home so what ways can I keep my plants sustained, growing and protected? 5. What are good tropical plants (since I'm in a tropical region) that grow fast and can withstand enormous amounts of rain? Tnx 2 any1 answering my questions! :]
