Garden Plants And Flowers Seeds Knowledge Base
Parents, do you start your gardening plants/flowers from seeds or do you buy plants? If you start them from seeds how long does it take for you to have a "strong" (flowering) plant for your garden? Yes, I know the seed packet will tell you and it depends on the type of plant but, it has been my experience, that the seeds did not "flower" until much later than the packet stated. This could just be me or something I'm doing wrong. I'm getting all my gardening stuff around so that I can start all my own plants this year. Do you have any advice and/or tips? BQ: Do your children like to help you in the garden? My LO loves it, the 16 y/o not so much. :)
Starting a new and first time flower garden, seeds vs. starter plants? Ok, so I want to start a flower garden this year. This is my first time. What is the best way to do that. Should I start with seeds and one of those starter kits and then once they've started to grow plant them. Or, should I just buy the flowers and plants that have already been started and put them in the ground. What's the best way for long lasting healthy flowers? How will I know when to plant them in the ground with either way I go? If I decide to go with seeds, when should I start buying and starting them? Any other good tips and facts would be much appreciated also!!! I'm very excited about doing this cuz it'll give me something to do with my time, i'm just not sure where to begin! lol Thanks in advance!
I am planting a flower garden from seed in Yucca Valley CA, what flowers grow best in that desert area? I am moving to Yucca Valley in Jan(from Ohio) and want to be prepared to plant the seeds in early spring. I want flowers that will grow in the natural desert soil without adding topsoil and ones that wont need much watering after they are established. I have a lot of area to work with so I want to do areas with wildflowers and also regular flowers. Ive been doing tons of searches but surprisingly enough cannot find any one book or source for desert flowers, so am trying to figure it out by searching : arid soil, sandy soil, zone 9, full sun etc and then trying to pick out ones common to all the lists. Unfortunately, while I have found a lsome useful information about wild flowers, I've found very little on *regular* flowers.. So if anyone has experience with flower gardening in the Mojave/desert any help would be appreciated. Thanks so much . Mykiel
can you use a tanning bed to start flowers/veggies seeds gardening plants? My dad and I just cleaned out a room to get a bed for my daughter that my mom had tucked away and there was a tanning bed in there. it is just the top of the tanning bed and it works and gets warm. We love to garden and the question came to us: "Would it work to start seeds and grow plants?" seems like it would be better than grow lights but not sure what the actual differance is???? So, If you know of an answer for us that would be great!! we were thinking about using in conjunction with his grow lights ....turn on the tanning bed for like an hour a day for intense direct light and heat?
When can i plant my garden and flowers??? We are suppose to get snow this weekend should i wait to plant my flowers( they are seeds)... should i plant them now or wait until may like it says too... when should i plant my garden? Do I put mulch in the garden before or after planting seeds? I got some packets of ground-cover type flower seeds, like wildflowers I guess, to plant in a section of garden area in front of my house. I am not too concerned with placement so I'm just going to spread them around and see what happens and hope they grow. I am figuring mulching over top of seeds or newly grown plants will suffocate them, but I just want to make sure because I'm not too educated with gardening. Thanks in advance.

Why am I so obsessed with gardening, plants, flowers, animals and birds? I noticed that I have been obsessed with gardenting since it's my first time starting a veggtable garden. Me and my boyfriend went to Lowe's yesterday and I spent 30 min in the garden area I wanted to buy everything I just ended up buying hummingbir food and a blueberry bush. I Went home and I started to pull a bunch of weeds and clean and water my garden, then I layed bird and squirrel food along my fence and I cleaned my hummingbird feeders and filled them up with hummingbird necter that I had made. I told my boyriend I should have bought a couple of more plants and seed that I saw there at the store but when I go back I will buy them. I want to buy and plant everything I love all plants and growing them from a seed. I love giving the seeds life because plants give oxygen to the world. Is there something wrong with me? oh and if you have garden design ideas please feel free to share. Thank you.
Need some help with planting a flower garden!? Hey Everyone! I am moving to a new house in the next couple weeks and noticed that the previous tenants had a small flower bed in the front of the condo. I have never planted my own garden before, only helped my mom. What is the best way to do it? Should I plants seeds or potted plants? Also what are some suggestions for easy growing purple, pink, yellow & white flowers? can you grow gerber daisies? Your help would be appreciated, I'm pretty clueless when it comes to this stuff!! Thanks!
What are some plants/flowers that are bee-friendly and would look awesome in a garden? I would like to know certain types of plants that are bee-friendly and the season they bloom/die and if possible, the price of the seeds. Thanks. Also, what are some things you recommend that I should do to create a bee-friendly garden? Hehe. Too many edits. I live in New York, and although I won't be living in the city, it'll still have it's fair share of pollution.
When to start planting seeds for flowers and veggies? We just recently bought a house whereas before we always lived in apartments. I would like to put some flowers in the front of the house and maybe start a garden in the backyard. i have no knowledge what so ever on gardening. I live in Northeast PA and would like to know when I should plant the seeds? Also I just saw a commercial on TV for the Roll Away Seeds where you just buy this 10 ft pad and roll it in the place you want flowers. Has anybody every used this before?
Cut flower garden- which plants grow best in the tropics? I live on a Caribbean island. I'd like to put in a cut flower garden so I can do flower arrangements. Right now I have a lot of bird of paradise flowers, but I'm looking for some variety. I'd like to order some seeds from the US, and pick up whatever I can find locally. But I'm not sure what holds over well in a vase. Know of any sites or forums on gardening in the tropics?
Best plants, shrubs for a border in garden? I have a west facing garden, and will be creating the border where there is direct sunlight. As its west facing the sunlight is stronger in the afternoon and evening... I'm a complete novice, and need some suggestions of the types of plants or shrubs best suited. I need something simple but challenging to care for... Is it best to get the plants already flowered or to plant seeds?!? Any tips would be useful!!!
My 4 year old daughter wants to plant a garden (flowers) and I don't have a clue of what to do.? I live in chicago and I want to know if this is a good time to plant anything and if so, what is something simple and inexpensive to plant and maintain? Are there any plants or flowers that we put in the ground now or should we only put down seeds? I'm sure my daughter is going to want to see results fast. I don't have a green thumb at all, so I need to know where to go and what to do.
What sorts of flowers and plants thrive in the northern US? I recently moved to Maine from Pennsylvania. I'm going to plant a garden this summer, but I don't know what sorts of plants and flowers will do best in the cooler tempetures. Any ideas? I'm renting the house, so I only need plants that will last one season. (the landlord already okayed the garden, so I don't have to worry about that). The house has a small yard bordered by trees on two sides, and a neighbor and a road on the other two, and most of it is very sunny. Its very rich, dark dirt, but its a little rocky. I'm looking for flowers, vegtables and herbs. I'm also on a budget, so plants I can grow from seed, or plants that are inexpensive would be the best. Any suggestions would be great! thanks!
What are some good perennial plants and flowers that will bloom for about a month during the summer? I am planning on having a really big flower garden next year. I would like to plant some perennials, but I would want them to last for about a month, more would be better. I have already bought some gladiolis and some other different kinds of mixed bulbs, and these will bloom for about 1-3 monthes. What are some more? Any lillies or anything like that? I don't care which type of perennial, but as long as it is nice. Ps. I have a packet of snapdragon seeds and a packet of larkspur seeds that i didn't get to plant this year, will they still be good for next year, so i can plant them then? Thanks in advance.
I know nothing about gardening. I planted wildflower seeds directly in my garden. Are they going to grow? I didn't know anything about starting them indoors and now I am reading all this stuff on them and I'm worried. My mom passed away this winter and she was the one to do all this stuff and I've never really payed attention. Actually she always just bought flowers. Anyways. I planted them well after any chance of frost and I water them everyday. They are in a mostly sunny partly shady area which they called for. I also planted a vine. Should I just count it as a loss and go buy flowers or do you think there is hope?
Blank space in my garden and suggestions? I live in New Mexico and planted a flower garden and planted bulbs, but now some grew and some didn't and I have an ugly blank space in the middle of my garden. Does anyone know of and good seed or flowers to plant that grow fast and cover the ground fast?
what wound be my best choice of garden plants? I want to start a garden in the spring infront of my south facing living room window. There is a tree on my front lawn, but it is still not all that big. I figure it to be about 2 story's high at the moment but I don't yet know what kind it is. I don't have a lot of money to work with, but I would like my place to look nice, I miss my garden since we moved here. I left a garden full of alysum and the name if the other flower has slipped my mind right now, it has pea sized white seeds and the flowers were yellow, orange and orange-red. It was also crawling. Anyway we moved the end of July to a townhouse with garden space in front, but nothing in it, except my recycle and compost bins right now. I had the idea to put in some spikes, probably either 1 big one in the middle or 1 on each end. If the one I have now survives through this currently snowless winter, I will use it in the garden. I am not sure what flowers to use in this garden though. I like calendulas and dwarf buddies. I am in Southern Ontario, so nothing tropical will work. I was just looking at a plant hardiness map on botany.com and my area is 5a, 5b or 6a. They are all close in colour as far as I can tell. The other plant was nasturtium and it looked like it was growing wild in my shade garden. My garden at that house was 100% north facing as was the house so it really only got the morning sun for a couple hours. The alysum never did very well in with the nasturtium in the shade, I think it got crowded out. I picked off a bunch of seeds and threw them back in the day before we moved from there, so I think the new tennants in that house are going to have a nice garden next summer. Also for digitalis, Ontario is in Canada. We are having a very mild winter so far, no snow yet, so I really have no idea what to expect for spring and summer this year. Even hotter than last year probably, I better buy a second garden hose to keep up with my garden's thirst. I am also worried that there is a downspout right at the end of my garden, it killed that part of my garden last year so I am not sure how to avoid this problem this year. I want to raise the garden bed somewhere between 6" & 1'. I want to raise it so I can see it from my living room and also so I have more room to add better soil, the ground seems pretty unforgiving right now, I barely saw weeds grow there in the summer. I plan to add drift wood to the corners of my front yard, it is a small yard, maybe chip out some holes and put in chicks and hens, and something simple and fairly short in front of that. I am debating weather to put anything around the base of the tree or maybe just a small ring of mulch. I have RBG size dreams on balcony box size money. I also plan to have a few puts of veggies in the back yard, I want to keep them in buckets as the backyard is fairly shady because there are bigger trees behind my small backyard. I live in low income housing so I don't get a lot of room to be creative outside and my cats will eat anything I bring inside. I just want the place to look nice and be comfortable here. I grew up in an apartment, now my own family, we live in a townhouse. My mom always had many many plants around, and still does. There is only 1 rood in the apt that doesn't have any plants in it and that is the bathroom. I love having plants around and I want to hopefully pass that love of plants and gardening on to our son and any other children we have in the future. I actually want to speak to management of this complex and see if there is room somewhere on the property to make a community garden, just for the complex. I am sure there would be a lot of interest with my neighbors.
Book recommendations for how to plan for when your garden flowers bloom? Are there any specific books out there, that can help me with timing my garden? So I know when I should plant certain seeds and bulbs to bloom at a certain time (for example, early spring), and then perfectly overlap with other seeds and bulbs that open in the following periods (mid to late spring, summer, etc) I am asking specifically in regards to what seeds are best planted over spring bulbs like tulips, etc. Thanks
How do I get my seedling flower plants to bloom? In April I planted several different kinds of flower seeds for my garden. I bought a small green house, transferred them to a bigger peat pot when they got bigger and then slowly introduced them to the outdoors. I lost some but my impatiens did really well, as they still are. Is there something special I need to do to get them to bloom? They are beautiful but they just have green. I check every day hoping to find buds. Am I just impatien(t). LOL.
How can I get Garden full of flowers? I would like to have a garden full of variety of flowers all SUMMER thru - need help choosing the right type of plants - the perennials flowers only for a short period and the annuals can get expensive - so I would like to start from the seeds - like to know what flowers do well from seeds and when would be the best time to start the seedlings indoors and what steps should I take - thank you - ps its a Montreal area
How to start a flower pot garden? I am looking to plant a garden using only flower pots this spring/summer. I am a college student who will be home for the summer and I don't have a yard suitable for planting in. I have heard that you can grow many different types of fruits and vegetables in large flowers pots. What fruits and veggies will grow well in limited space? PS- I live in Iowa. Also, how do I go about preparing the soil and planting the seeds for these plants? When can I plant them? Thanks!
Any Tips for someone new in gardening? I have this new interest now and that is caring for the yard. I haven't tried gardening all my life except in school projects. I live in the Northwest Coast and it is spring and I want to put up a garden. I read online that there are kinds of flowers, plants, etc and they fall into categories such as annual, perrenial and others. Wow this is all new to me the language of plants and I want to get down on my knees and start a garden. What plants and flowers and herbs should be easy to grow for starters like me? And does anyone give free seedlings, seeds, plants, flowers to grow? ;-) just trying my luck.. Thank you and have a wonderful and lovely springtime..we get rains here though...
Where can I buy wildflower plants or seeds? Or any plant with green flowers? I'm especially interested in bluets: English daisies (bellis perennis)--not the cultivated ones that I've seen in some catalogs and garden centers, but the little wild ones that grow in the grass in England and France; and white and yellow violets--not the violas that one mail order garden center sold me as violets. As for green flowers, I have some but am interested in any except (at present) hydrangeas, which grow too big for my garden. I don't have much luck with getting "viridifloral" plants to come back after the first year.
Irises - how do i get the seeds from the flowers? I got some cut irises from a friend on mother's day and i was thinking that if i can get the seeds from the flowers I can plant them and grow irises in my garden. How do i get the seeds from the flowers and where are they located in the flower? What process do I need to do to grow them? Thanks! :)
Is it cheaper to grow plants from seeds? My boyfriend and I want to redo the gardens around our new home. I'd like to add some flowering plants, right now they are all just bushes. Would it be cheaper to go and buy the seeds of the plants I want and grow them or wait till spring and buy them grown already?
Any advice on how to start a perennial flower garden from seed? After trial and error and tons of research I finally got the hang of starting seeds (mainly vegetables) indoors and have been very successful. However I haven't had much luck starting seeds outdoors. I am wanting to start a perennial garden along my front walkway but have no idea what the proper steps are for directly sowing flower seeds. My flower beds have already been prepared I was wondering what I have to do to protect and care for the seeds and seedlings so that they will grow to hardy plants and not die. And what are some good planting methods that will insure my success. Should I plant the seeds where I want them to grow or should I create a nursery bed and transplant them.I live in South Carolina and my garden will have very hot full sun for the entire day. I have attempted to grow from seed outdoors before but for some reason the flowers never did germinate. I am open to any ideas and advice Thanks
Gardeners: I was given a package of butterfly garden seeds, aka a variety of different...? ...flowers in one package. Does anyone know if these can be planted in large containers rather than directly in the garden. My sunny garden space is limited and the areas I do have available are small. It sounds like these seeds need mostly sun. I've never met a seed I didn't like nor a plant, hence the slight crowding in my garden. Here's hoping I can make patio plants out of them. Thanks in advance.
Is it too late to plant seeds here? I live in Northern IL area and the winter was very long so I did get around yet to planting. I have so many veggie and flower seeds and I want a success in the garden. I also have watermelon seeds. Is it too late here now to plant?
Do Ferry Morse flower seeds (Morning Glories) have a chemical coating? I'm trying to have a complete organic garden, and I have a few Ferry Morse brand seeds. But I know that some brands put chemicals on their Morning Glory seeds because some people use them as drugs (?). "There have been reports that commercially available packets of morning glory seeds from some distributors are coated with fungicides or other chemicals to increase shelf life or discourage the practice of eating them. Seeds from plants grown in one's own garden will be safe as long as you do not spray them with insecticides. " I just didn't want to put seeds into my garden with chemicals that could possibly harm other vegetables or flowers. THANKS!
Christian story hour based on seeds, growing, flowers gardening, any great verses or Bible stories ? I posted this question a long time ago before my puter crashed and I lost it all. If you have children 8 and under especially 5 and under, what are some ways you can think of to talk about God at their level and using gardening of flowers to teach lessons. Please only answer if you have good ideas, the answer that just post to get 10 points or 3 pts. for answering are just irritants to us all. I know children very very well, but I always like to brain storm and last time I came up with great responses to put on my list. WEd. is our first and I think I'm going to start looking at various flower seed of all kinds and shapes and explain to them that they were created by God like this, and then each plants one and as time goes by it will turn into some kind of flower, just like God created them unique etc. Please don't voice your opinion as to whether you think I should do this or not, if I wanted to know that, I would ask, please :)
Starter plants and new shrubbery? We have been getting our planting done around the house and landscaping as the previous owners did not care for yard work. My question is this, I read on all of the tags in the flowers and shrubs that they need to be watered daily until they take. My brother in law once again is telling me I am wrong which he seems to enjoy doing. We have planted seeds in the garden as well as starter plants, we planted two hydrangeas a rhododendrun and two cherry trees in the back yard. There are also bedding plants in the back. We planted two small shrubs in the front a rhododendrun and a japanese split leaf maple. There are also three hanging baskets with petunias. Am I correct that these need to be watered everyday?
Is it too late in the season to plant seeds? I want to have a vegetable garden again this year but I think it may be too late to start from seed. Is that true? I am in Colorado and I believe the frost danger has passed. What about flower seeds? Can I still plant those too? Can you recommend me some please?
Start with seedlings or seeds? Flowers- annuals.? I am wondering what I should do for my garden... I would like to start it all off with seedlings. They grow quicker and show results faster... but the budget part of my garden says to use seeds- help! I want a ton of colour, something easy to maintain. I want to "colour up" a strip in front of my house that is about 20 feet long, 14" depth. What flowers can I choose as seedlings that are cheap and easy to care for? I want something BASIC, I am more concerned with colour than I am with having an award garden! I have $50 to spend today on plants, what do you suggest?? I livein Southern Ontario, if that helps!
I have about 20 packages of seeds,.. flowers, vegetables, they were packed for2003, says on the pckg.are they? Still good? I planted a flower bed with the flower seeds, 2 weeks ago, not much came up yet, so before I go into the job of starting a garden, I am wondering if those seeds are any good, thanks! Martha that is good advice, I wanted to give those seeds a chance to bloom, I always thought seeds lasted hundreds of years!
How do you grow a cheap yet beautiful flower garden? i would love to grow a garden at this time of year but i dont want to spend alot of money on it.I dont know whether its better to buy seeds or actual flowers to plant.i think it would be nice to put a white fence around it for a sense of privacy.Tell me what you think.I would also like a good estimate for the price too.Could anyone help me?
Self-seeding plants that do well in Texas? I need a nice list of self-seeding flowering plants, or spreading plants (is that the same thing?) for my garden. I've seen a garden online and it's beautiful and natural looking, like it's been there forever. I want to try to accomplish this and keep it for my father as a gift, as he loves gardening, but does not have a green thumb (His problem is that he's too busy, I think). Any good suggestions for Zone 9 hardy plants? Thanks!!!
What kind of flower seeds can I plant now? I am in So. Cal, we are about 90-100 with high humidity. I planted corn, they have all bloomed, so I just cleaned out my garden planter and am wondering what kind of flower seeds, if any, might grow if I plant them now. Thanks in advance
