Garden Nurseries/Catalog House? Seeking a catalog nursery, the name which begins with "S". They supply the more unusual bulbs, perenials, shrubs and trees as well as some of the traditionals. It is safe to say that this house is a little more specialized in offering something different. I have recently moved and wanted to find them again that I may include them in my new landscape. Should anyone have a clue I would appreciate their input. Powering a fountain/filter for a container water garden? This is my first time trying something like this. I’m making a 30 gallon half-barrel water garden with 2-3 goldfish, some aquatic snails, and appropriate flora (hyacinth, anacharis, parrot’s feather…). I would like a fountain and filter, but the closest electrical outlet is 50 ft away. I’ve been reading but haven’t been able to determine what degree of filtration is recommended for a container garden with fish. If I were to couple the solar fountain with weekly 20% water changes, would this be sufficient to deter algae growth and keep ammonia/nitrite levels down?

Have you found a source of spares for older Challenge Xtreme garden tools sold by Argos? Instant obsolesence? Once deleted from catalogue, it seems impossible to get spares. Argos are not helpful, even when it concerns parts that I would regard as consumables. i.e.strimmer spring !

So, who else has started to plan their garden? I received my favorite gardening catalog in the mail the other day, and now I'm planning my garden. Are there any other gardeners out there who have started planning their gardens already? What do you plan to put in them? Just curious... :o) Oops! I guess I should mention what I'm planting, eh? :o) Seeds of Change is the only catalog I order from, and, boy, do they have some cool varieties this year! I may even try amaranth or quinoa if I can find space for them. Otherwise, I always plant tomatoes, potatoes, hot peppers, sweet peppers, sunflowers, squash, corn, basil, and I need to replant strawberries... that's where I'm at, for now. I have asperagus and blueberries plus catnip, beebalm, and chives (assuming they make it through winter) already in the garden. My daughter has her own garden, though I don't think she's planned it, yet.. I have grapevines, but I neglected them last year. I'll be busy trimming them and installing trellises this spring. Has anyone used or heard of Amazoy zoysia grass? We saw an add in a gardening catalogue for this "amazing" grass that you receives as plugs. It is excellent for horrible soil and we have tried everything for the past 6 seasons to get half decent grass in our yard. I am just wondering if anyone has used it and if they had any luck with it. I am trying to get ideas and funding to have a sensory room put in our garden for my 4 yr old disabled son Our little boys bedroom is just not big enough to do exactly what we would like. hence the idea of a log cabin came about. were saving ourselves and applied to a few people for any kind of help. any ideas would be appreciated. sponsored events etc. he gets so much joy out of sensory rooms we have visited and i would like it to be on hand at home. also so his little mates can benefit too as a lot of sensory rooms only allow a couple of kids at the same time. Where to find a laughing buddha garden sculpture? Ok, so I saw this laughing buddha/hotei statue in a catalog once while looking at it with my girlfriend she really liked it. Her b-day is coming and I really want to get it, but we don't have this catalog anymore and I can't find the statue. I am hoping to find the name of the company that sends these catalogs out so I can call them or check their website and order it. It was one of those sort of "yoga style" catalogs, not just yoga stuff, but a lot of clothes and items for meditation, etc. It sort of looked like a coldwater creek catalog in layout. Where can I get allot of free catalogs coming to me thru snail mail by using either the net or the 1-800's ect I am stuck at home for awhile and I love to get catalogs in the mail.I always have. They are like 'wishbooks'. And they take me away and give me hope. Sounds wierd now that I re-read this. oh well. I do order from them occasionally. How well do the pre seeded flower rolls work? I have a black thumb in gardening. I can't even keep my mini indoor herb garden alive. I know, Ha Ha. How to creat well drained soil? I am planning on putting in a cutting garden and was looking at some catalogues yesterday. All the flowers I was interested in needed well drained soil and I am pretty sure the area I will be planting in has pretty heavy clay soil. I have heard that if you just dig out the clay and replace it with compost you create basically tubs that do not drain well. So I need to know how best to improve the drainage. I am looking to fit the area in Aug-Sept for planting in late Sept or Oct.

did i do the right thing for my garden? advice? i never planted plants before <or maybe i did but that's just something for school, so anyway> but did some research and planning before doing some gardening in our front yard and now i'm worried that i may have had put too much steer manure blend in our garden. well, you see, this is what i did: - tilled the soil about 6-8 inches. - put 2-4 inch layer of Steer manure blend. Label: http://www.scotts.com/smg/catalog/productTemplate.jsp?tabs=general&proId=prod70587&itemId=cat60014&id=cat140002 basically not pure manure- it was mixed with compost and a whole lot of other organic stuff - added some potting mix, can't remember how much <forgot the brand name and its contents but i'm pretty sure that it's almost the same as the steer manure blend and something says slow-nitrogen release> - mixed them all together. - wet the soil - wait about 30 mins - planted some plants, dug deeper holes for replanting the big-rooted ones <bird of paradise, lily-of-the-nile/agapanthus, african iris, some daisies but not the gerber type, non-english lavender, sweet pea shrub, false heather, and some pansies> retained the soil from the pot though, which was originally from the nursery. watered the plants lightly mulched, about 1-2 inches <w/ tree barks, i don't know which from> i live in southern california and the soil here is not ideal for gardening and ours is like the dirt you see in a typical southern california freeway- very dry, dusty, pale, hard, compact, and rocky; so amending the soil is a definite must. the steer manure blend bag says 'put 1 inch or less' but our soil was never fertilized and amended before so i opted to put more to attain that dark rich-looking soil; so now i'm a bit worried coz i'm not sure if i over did it. btw, its in zone 8b, partial shade/sun. early morning and late afternoon sun. maybe that would minimize the burning effect of over-fertilizing.

Does anyone have the 2005 ABC Distributing Catalog.? I am looking for curtain panels that I saw last year in the ABC Distributing Catalog. It was a set of two white panels that had a picture on it that gave the illusion of an open door leading to a garden. They are no longer in the catalog. Astible- why can't I get spectacular blooms? I've have some astilbe for about five years now- I was just going to dig them up and abandon them this year. I've never gotten any nice flowers like you see in the garden catalogs! I've moved them once to a different spot, with no luck. Is there a secret to getting them to bloom like you see in the pictures of them? That is why I bought them in the first place- to give that great color in a shady garden. The other shade lovers are spectacular, but the astilbe are a great dissapointment.

Flowers/plants that don't attract bees? We live in North Carolina and are wanting to put a few nice flowers or plants around the base of our mailbox. We are not experienced with a lot of gardening, and I would not be able to tell the difference between a lot of flowers or plants. While I realize bees are necessary for pollination, are there any flowers or plants (no vines or plants that will "grow" across our yard), that do not attract bees? I'd like to look into a few suggestions and see if we can find them locally, or even order them through a gardening catalog/website.

Best product/method for lining a gravel driveway? I have a gravel driveway, want to keep it, but not the ridiculous amount of weeds that proliferate. I've seen products of varying composition that you can lay on the ground to suppress weeds, but don't know which one might work. I'd like to rake the old gravel out of the way, regrade a bit so water runs away, lay down some sort of fabric, stake it, and recover with additional gravel. However, I need something durable, and preferably something that will let water percolate through rather than run off. Various gardening catalogs have weed suppression fabric, but has anyone tried to do something similar? Any recommendations?

That just would make me fall over and die with joy. I can't help it I'm a passionate gardner and can't plant this year because I'm moving in a couple of months. Its agonyyyyyyyyy! Does anyone know anything about the Dracunculus vulgaris aka Dragon Lily? I planted two of the bulbs last fall. The catalog I purchased them from showed a photo of a plant with a beautiful deep burgundy flower. So far, I just have one beautiful plant. No flower. The other withered and died. Landscaping help for steep bank? It's spring or almost here in Southwestern, PA. I'm zone 4 or 5 depending ont he gardening catalog I'm looking at. I have a very steep bank that we cannot mow, therefore my husband uses the weed wacker about every 2 months. So the weeds get very high. The top of the bank levels out to be our yard. The bottom of the bank is our driveway - we live on the side of the hill and our yard is in many different levels. I'm looking for a shrub or plant that will cascade down over the bank and choke out the weeds. Lots of color would be nice as we are in the woods. But the plants will have moist to wet ground and all day sun. Low maintenance and fast growing would be a bonus. Any suggestions? Thanks so much for your help.
