Why is it that no flower/seed catalogs will ship to Alaska? None of the company's, even the more well known and popular ones will ship to Alaska. They won't ship seeds, bulbs or live plants or trees. Anyone know of any place that will? Or am I just stuck with the small crappy selection that Wal Mart, Lowe's, Home Depot, Fred Meyers, Etc has. I'd like a bigger selection of flowers to choose from. And since those stores flowers can be shipped, why cant' I order from a seed catalog?
why is it that in the seed catalogs they advertise fruit tree's and then say they can ship to wa,or,ca,etc.? i always get the gurney, henry fields, and other catalog's, but on most of the fruit tree's it say's cant ship to wa,ca,or, and some other states, is this a law in states or is it the seed companies have deals with larger buying fruit companies? like plum tree's cant be shipped to washington state. why is this?
2 questions. 1=seed catalogs 2=sharpening shovels? 1= What companies send out free seed catalogs? The big thing to stress is FREE. #2= What tool do I need to sharpen my spade and shovel with. I was told that a flat rock would do but I dont know so I wanted to ask. Garden Seed Catalogs? What are some good garden seed catalogs that have vegetable, herb and flower seeds. I like Urban Farmer Seeds (http://www.ufseeds.com) catalog but would like some more opinions! Thanks
Good Tree/Shrub Seed Catalogs? I'm looking for a seed catalog that I can order (for free) online to be sent to my house. I'm interested in buying seeds for either a tree or shrub in order to grow a bonsai. Specifically I would like it to have some azaleas. I've been searching online forever, but can't seem to come up with anything. I don't need a bonsai catalog, just one with seeds that will make good bonsais. Thanks. Maybe I wasn't clear. I don't need free seeds, just a free catalog that I can buy seeds from. My bad.
Using lights or heating pads for seed germination? I am starting some tomato seeds and the seed catalogs say to keep them at approx. 75 degrees to keep them warm enough to germinate. I have them under flourescent lights, but it wasn't keeping them warm enough so I put a heating pad under the seed tray as well. Is it okay to use both? Also, do I keep the lights on until the seeds germinate and then just 12-14 hours a day? I appreciate the help!
I just got a vegetable seed catalog and am wondering? Why we dont see more varieties of certain vegetables available in the market. This catolog has got 100s of amazing varieties of corn, brussel sprouts, peas, cauliflower, etc. I had no idea these things even existed. Any idea why we dont see more of them? I am going to try to grow some of my own, but my green thumb is actually a little on the yellow side.

What is the best corn seed for home garden? I get all these catalogs (Jungs, Gurneys, etc.) that have the sugar enhanced varieties and I would like to know what you think is the best corn to plant. With a crop of corn, you only have one shot so I want to make sure it is really sweet. What seed do you reccomend?
Flower Seed Catalog Information? Once again it is flower seed catalog time. I have been burned so many times when ordering seeds. They tell you the zone, whether it is Annual or Perrenial, shade or sun but don't tell you the difficulty to grow. Many of the time the seeds are dustlike or practically require laboratory conditions to grow. What is a good source to find seeds that are a decent size and easy to grow for a typical home gardener without a greenhouse in zone 5? I have good luck with marigolds, asters, zinnnias, but would like to expand my universe. Maybe a company that pelletizes small seeds!
Where can I buy hypoxis hirsuta seed packets? My mother has this on her Christmas list, and I can't find a packet of this seed in stock anywhere on the internet (and I've been searching online catalogs for hours). Any suggestions? Other names for this plant are: Yellow Star Grass, Eastern Yellow Star-grass, Yellow Stargrass, Common Goldstar, Hairy Stargrass, Yellow-Eyed Grass. I'm really not looking for bare root. Is seed ever available for this plant?
What are some plants that attract butterflies I can grow from seed? I have a greenhouse and wanted to start some plants from seed that will attract butterflies. I could use some help getting started in the right direction... Thanks-Lee
Do all apple trees require a pollinator? In the seed catalogs, some apple tree varieties say "needs a pollinator" but most don't say anything. Should I assume I'd need to buy two trees of different varieties, or even of the same variety?
Has anyone worked with Himalayan Blue Poppies? I just love the look but before I shell out the cash, I want to make sure that I am absolutely going to love them. Pros and Cons please, that would be very helpful. Also, if anyone knows where to get them from; seed catalogs, online, etc. that would also be helpful. I've seen them in Michigan Bulb Co. catalog but I know that that company has some serious problems with their products and doesn't rate very well among gardeners. Thank you for looking!! :)
Looking for a seed catalog that has been around for a loooong time? My dad was telling me that my great-grandpa used to have a beautiful rose garden. He used to buy seeds from the same catalog every year. One year because had been such a good customer for ever they let him name a flower (i think a yellow rose of some sort). I was wondering if anyone knew of catalog companies that had been around for years?? My great-grandpa died in the 90's and my great-grandma died last year. No one else remembers this info and I was hoping to be able to contact some companies and see if they had some information. Thanks! Well I'm just looking for the name of the rose that he actually named... and then go from there. I just know it was some old catalog...
Seniors, anyone else planning their spring and summer gardens yet? I've gone through my seeds and supplies. I've thumbed through the seed catalogs. I have my order ready to place online Monday. I'll be putting my tomato, pepper and basil seeds in peat pellets next week. I'm going to plant my snow peas and snap peas too. I can hardly wait to start digging.

Is flax seed toxic? I had read in various health and nutrition books that flax seed was good to eat, but I recently read in a seed catalog that flax seed is toxic. I wonder if, perhaps, the seed company treats the seed with some kind of toxin. What can you tell me?
Can anyone tell me how to harvest Castor beans? I have four castor bean plants and one is producing bright red spikey orbs that must be seed pods. Do I wait till first frost or should just forget about them. I live in SE Montana and people want seeds from me. I've told them to just order from a seed catalog but they want mine!!!
Is there a UK gardening supplier of red kidney beans for planting? We have been trying to find a seed supplier of red kidney beans for two years now. All the regular seed catalogues do not seem to stock them anymore. We have been saving some of our own crop for the next year, but that reduces the yield we have for eating! Any help appreciated!
Raintree Nursery or Territorial Seed Company? I'm hoping people can share experiences they've had ordering from these two catalogs. I have one of each right now and am starting to budget my garden this year and I'd like to know what people think of these two companies, as far as price, quality, etc. I'd also like to know if you think their phone operators know their stuff because I'll be calling in an order but I'll have a lot of questions for them as far as what varieties will do well in my area, when to plant, etc. Thanks for your input!
What is the best gardening catalog to order from?? I like to look at all the catalogs (Michigan Bulb, Nature Hills, Park Seed). I have never ordered from one though. I don't want to waste money on junky plants. Any suggestions for a catalog that has plants that are worth it?
English Flower Garden? I'm interested in creating an authentic English garden, and I was wondering if anyone knows of any English seed catalogs that I can order through the mail? Thanks... I'm zone 5, and where I'm at gets a good amount of rainfall all year...
What kind of plant is this? I'm looking for information on a plant called Prairie White. I was told by a friend that it is a great flower and smells nice. But have had no luck finding it in seed catalogs. Is there another name for it? Thanks! No, it's not a variety of orchid. This was a plant growing in their perennial garden. It has white spikes of flowers.
How does reimer seeds produce 2000 types of peppers all in one season? Hi I am asking this question because I am curious about the reimer seeds company. The seed company apparently has a catalog that they ship new seeds each season. What I want to know is does reimer seeds produce new pepper seeds each season. How can the company grow 2000 varieties of peppers all in one season.
Where can I find herb seeds for sale online? Such as Gurney's (but not Gurney's!). I am looking for an assortment of seeds running from Marjoram, to Rosmary. I cant seem to find any. I would prefer to be able to request a catalog. Thanks!
Growing radishes...? Does anyone know if it is fun to grow radishes in a pot indoors? I keep seeing in the seed catalogs seeds for all sorts of pretty new radish varieties and although I do not at present have a garden, I would like to try them because they look so amusing? Thank you ..... Happy New Year!
Is there a Law that hybrid plants have to be stated as such in there description when selling.? I am trying to start planting several cherry bushes, blueberrys, and vegitables. I want to be able to save my seeds and replant them, but I dont' know how to make sure the plants I'm buying are not hybrid so that I can do that. I noticed in some of the plant catalogs the description states Hybrid. Is there a law that hybrid plants have to be stated in the description. Thanks jada
Poll about veggies. It will only take a second!? Our seed catalog came today Okay, I see a lot of things in there kind of exotic, like black tomatoes and such..So I was wondering, would you be more willing to buy a more exotic version of a food like a purple tomato or would you be more willing for a classic red? all will be organic
Can I plant seeds from fruits and veggies purchased at the grocery store? Okay, so I've been looking at seed catalogs and planning my garden for next year. Potatos are pretty expensive, about $18 a set for the fingerlings I want. However, the same fingerlings sold for eating are only about $8 a sack at Costco. So here's what I'm wondering ... couldn't I buy the fingerlings from Costco, let them start growing eyes, and then plant those? Is there any reason why I can't plant any seeds obtained from organic fruits and veggies? Okay, I know that if I grow an apple tree or pear tree from seed, I'm going to get a surprise tree with fruit unlike the fruit I got the seed from, but in general, can I plant potatoes from the store? What about taking the seeds out of peppers, tomatoes, squash, etc? Anyone know? I'm not even super concerned with it coming from an organic fruit or veggie, as long as I grow it organic on my end. Part of the reason why I garden is to save money on food, and I know I'll get a lot more in harvest than what I spend on seed, but if I can cut my costs on seed it sure would help.
Why isn't my broccoli making heads? ? It has been growing nearly two months and it has huge leaves. There is not the slightest sign of a head. The seed catalog says it should be ready in 60 days. It is almost 60 days and there are no heads.
Question about Bunny Tail's Grass? I would like to plant bunny's tails grass this spring, also known as hare's tales grass or rabbit's tales grass, scientific name lagurus ovatus. I had never seen it before spotting it in a seed catalog recently, and would like to know if anyone has had experience with it in their garden or otherwise. Thanks!

Do they put those .....? beautiful illustrations in seed catalogs so you can see what you planted would look like if they had ever come up?
My seeds have germinated, but it's still another 4.5 weeks till the last hard frost when I can put them out!!? What do I do with my plants that have already germinated really well?? My cucumbers, watermelon, tomatoes, eggplant, cantalope, ect.... have already germinated to a nice size and I'm worried they'll get too big before it's time to put them out after the last hard frost (here in KS apx. April 17th). If I put them in the basement for cooler temps and less sun (well, no sun..) will they die? I thought this would make them grow a bit slower. I bought seeds from Johnnhy's seed catalog and put them in a sunny south facing window on the 2nd floor and they just took off really fast!
Best tomatoes for 2009? I'm looking at my Johnny's seed catalog, and just drooling! Decisions, decisions. What *are* the best tomatoes for 2009? I live in a northern climate, but I've got a greenhouse, so a long growing time is OK. I did try Brandywine once, but it cracked a lot in the greenhouse, and I didn't find the taste super -- it was tasty, but not super. Looking forward to your recommendations!
I'm looking for an open source pictorial catalog of (seedling to plant identification) and garden pests? If you know of any I would be happy to see them, I often times find myself struggleing to find out harmful from benificial insects, and distinguishing weeds from seed planted seedlings. I believe a pictorial identification guide would be very helpful. If one does not exist perhaps we should start one? :-) Zymo Thanks! So I take it you have been unable to find a complete source for this as well? If I could I would give you all the best answer. :-) Zymo thanks again, I like all of the suggestions.

Where did you get your plants? Hello! As i anxiously await the arrival of spring,i ponder the same question " Where am i going to buy my plants?" However i usually just go to some road stands or a plant shop for them. This year however, i want to purchase my plants and seeds from a big nursery or something like that. So in the past week i have searched the internet a sent many , upon many of FREE catalogs to my house. So, i was wondering" Where did you buy your plants if you bought them from a catalog?" Also if you did buy them from a catalog"What did you buy, and were you happy with them?" Any input would be great!
Could anyone explain how to "cold frame" plants? I started some lupine and columbine in September and I read in a seed catalog that they need to be cold framed over the winter. The lupine are now in 2 liter Pepsi bottles (in potting soil, of course) and the columbine are in a 5 inch deep window box. Can I put them in the garage for the winter and will they be okay to plant in the Spring? Is this "cold-framing"? Thank you, one and all. This seems WAY too ambitious. I'm still wondering if I can keep them in my garage for the winter and if they'll still be alive in the Spring. They're perennials but I don't know how hearty they are. You were all so helpful. I wish I could give you all a Best Answer but I'll have to throw it up for the voters. Thanks again!

I Think I Saw A Robot....? Hello. I love you guys because when I need an answer, you always manage to steer me in the right direction. So, now, I have yet another question. Here goes. I was thumbing through a magazine one day and I thought I saw one item in one particular magazine that was like a robot. It wasn't like a kiddie sized robot but like a less expensive type of robot and I think it could get or hold beer. I was thinking of getting this for my husband for Christmas. Can you all help me find which catalog I may have seed this electronic. I do know that it wasn't from a big box store type catalog. It was from a catalog that I never asked for, like you know, you order one thing online or by mail and the next thing you know you start getting these catalogs from people that you never even heard of. I thought it was in on e called "Seventh Avenue" but I looked and it wasn't. Thanks you guys in advance and enjoy your weekend. Please no smart comments.
