Do SC's look at seed catalogs and begin to plan gardens, however small, when it is still snowing? Now that I live in an apt. I still get the urge to dig in the dirt. I guess you can take the girl out of the country, but you can't take the country out of the girl. I plant herbs, greens, veggies and flowers in containers. How about you? All wonderful answers. Thank you all.

Good sources for seeds for a edible home garden? After reading Scocasso !'s comment, I'm really inspired to get a edible garden on my own. My parents used to have a small edible homegrown garden when we were growing up and I remember it was really enjoyable to grow you own food. So does anyone know any good online or catalogue source where I can buy seeds for vegetable and fruits? Or perhaps any tip on finding a local garden supplier? Thanks a lot.
What is a online gardening catalog I can buy watercress seeds? I tried Burpee, Planet Natural, and Home Gardens.
Looking for a seed catalog that has been around for a loooong time? My dad was telling me that my great-grandpa used to have a beautiful rose garden. He used to buy seeds from the same catalog every year. One year because had been such a good customer for ever they let him name a flower (i think a yellow rose of some sort). I was wondering if anyone knew of catalog companies that had been around for years?? My great-grandpa died in the 90's and my great-grandma died last year. No one else remembers this info and I was hoping to be able to contact some companies and see if they had some information. Thanks! Well I'm just looking for the name of the rose that he actually named... and then go from there. I just know it was some old catalog...
What is the best gardening catalog to order from?? I like to look at all the catalogs (Michigan Bulb, Nature Hills, Park Seed). I have never ordered from one though. I don't want to waste money on junky plants. Any suggestions for a catalog that has plants that are worth it?
I'm looking for an open source pictorial catalog of (seedling to plant identification) and garden pests? If you know of any I would be happy to see them, I often times find myself struggleing to find out harmful from benificial insects, and distinguishing weeds from seed planted seedlings. I believe a pictorial identification guide would be very helpful. If one does not exist perhaps we should start one? :-) Zymo Thanks! So I take it you have been unable to find a complete source for this as well? If I could I would give you all the best answer. :-) Zymo thanks again, I like all of the suggestions.
Raintree Nursery or Territorial Seed Company? I'm hoping people can share experiences they've had ordering from these two catalogs. I have one of each right now and am starting to budget my garden this year and I'd like to know what people think of these two companies, as far as price, quality, etc. I'd also like to know if you think their phone operators know their stuff because I'll be calling in an order but I'll have a lot of questions for them as far as what varieties will do well in my area, when to plant, etc. Thanks for your input!
Seniors, are you already planning your garden for Spring? As I sit in my house with ice outside, I have all my seed catalogues close at hand....and am already thinking of what varieties of food to grow in the community garden project we set up for the children. Are you going to have a vegetable/flower patch again this year....what are you planning to grow? I am so looking forward to reading your answers.....I KNOW we have a lot of folks in our section that just love digging in the dirt, and fooling with plants with the complete contentment of a child. I am nearly chomping at the bit to get my hands in dirt....SPRING SPRING get here soon!!!
Can I plant seeds from fruits and veggies purchased at the grocery store? Okay, so I've been looking at seed catalogs and planning my garden for next year. Potatos are pretty expensive, about $18 a set for the fingerlings I want. However, the same fingerlings sold for eating are only about $8 a sack at Costco. So here's what I'm wondering ... couldn't I buy the fingerlings from Costco, let them start growing eyes, and then plant those? Is there any reason why I can't plant any seeds obtained from organic fruits and veggies? Okay, I know that if I grow an apple tree or pear tree from seed, I'm going to get a surprise tree with fruit unlike the fruit I got the seed from, but in general, can I plant potatoes from the store? What about taking the seeds out of peppers, tomatoes, squash, etc? Anyone know? I'm not even super concerned with it coming from an organic fruit or veggie, as long as I grow it organic on my end. Part of the reason why I garden is to save money on food, and I know I'll get a lot more in harvest than what I spend on seed, but if I can cut my costs on seed it sure would help.
Seniors, anyone else planning their spring and summer gardens yet? I've gone through my seeds and supplies. I've thumbed through the seed catalogs. I have my order ready to place online Monday. I'll be putting my tomato, pepper and basil seeds in peat pellets next week. I'm going to plant my snow peas and snap peas too. I can hardly wait to start digging.
Is there a UK gardening supplier of red kidney beans for planting? We have been trying to find a seed supplier of red kidney beans for two years now. All the regular seed catalogues do not seem to stock them anymore. We have been saving some of our own crop for the next year, but that reduces the yield we have for eating! Any help appreciated!
Would like to know BEST catalog sites for ordering gardening supplies....? I was wondering if anyone could let me know a few of the BEST sites to order seeds, sets, gardening supplies online? I know if you ask several different people, you'll get several different answers, but what are the few BEST known, reputable and INexpensive places to purchase seeds, sets, or anything for your garden? I have heard before that there are about 4 or 5 really good places, can anyone relay them to me...or their sites? Thanks SO much in advance! Starr
As a kid, i sold stuff for a co. then i could buy stuff from their catalog with my earnings. Anyone familiar? I sold garden flower seeds for several summers for this company and then I could buy what ever I wanted from their "prize" catalog, if I made enough money. I want my son to do something like this. does anyone know of anything?
Growing radishes...? Does anyone know if it is fun to grow radishes in a pot indoors? I keep seeing in the seed catalogs seeds for all sorts of pretty new radish varieties and although I do not at present have a garden, I would like to try them because they look so amusing? Thank you ..... Happy New Year!
How well do the pre seeded flower rolls work? I have a black thumb in gardening. I can't even keep my mini indoor herb garden alive. I know, Ha Ha. Anyways, I was wondering about these pre seeded flower rolls I've seen in catalogs and on TV. Has anyone tried these? and what kind of results should I expect? Obviously, I won't get to excited given my "black thumb" past. :)
California! Where can I find starter plants for Sweet Potatoes ? Having read that sweet potatoes beat regular potatoes for nutrition, I'm now on a mission to grow some myself. I've made the rounds to all my home/garden/orchard/landscaping supply places and been unable to find starter plants or seeds for any variety of sweet potatoes. I checked out Burpee's and some other seed catalogs and although they sell seeds, they won't ship to California! Probably cause of the quarantine. So how do I get some sweet potato plants? I don't want to put California's agriculture industry in danger, so I won't be smuggling them in from elsewhere. What can I do?!? I can't speak for San Diego, but... where I live it simply does not frost. According to the Farmers Almanac it is getting right into the sweet potato planting time right now, so on two counts I don't think it's too early to plant. Burpee's specifically won't ship Sweet Potato plants here: "Sorry, but we cannot ship this item to Alaska, Hawaii, Florida, Colorado, Montana, Nevada, Idaho." I have thought of planting sweet potatoes I "start" myself from produce section potatoes, but I'm not sure if its the "best" way... I don't want to get all the way to harvest time and find that it's like citrus trees grown from seed or from suckers... inferior and sort of wild.
Question about Bunny Tail's Grass? I would like to plant bunny's tails grass this spring, also known as hare's tales grass or rabbit's tales grass, scientific name lagurus ovatus. I had never seen it before spotting it in a seed catalog recently, and would like to know if anyone has had experience with it in their garden or otherwise. Thanks!
Gardeners or others - Do you prefer gardening on your hands and knees or bent over with your butt in the air.? Humor me - I've read all my new seed catalogs and I'm bored. I usually alternate the styles of 'brb' and Passenger. I find if I bend over, all the blood rushes to my pea brain and I end up head-butting a cabbage. @ Moonplan - Vessey's, Thompson&Morgan and my Fungi Perfecti catalogs @ reyn- Damn girl - now I got these naughty thoughts going through my mind. Yeah I'm getting bored with the Bible thumpers and God bashers over in R&S, good to be back.
Can someone please help me solve these math problems? Please show the equation you used to solve. 1. Tickets for the drama club's performance last weekend cost $2.50 for adults and $2.00 for students. Four hundred twenty adults attended the performance, and 273 students attended. What was the total ammount of money collected from tickets for the performance last weekend? 2. Gregory ordered the following items from the Huntington Gardens catalog: a watering can for $15.80, a trowel for $4.49, and 6 packages of seeds for $.75 each. He must add $2.50 for shipping charges. He has 2 coupons, each allowing him to deduct $2.00 from his order. How much will Gregory pay for the order? 3. Sarah Holness had her car tuned up for $60 and she purchased 4 new tires for $37 each. She gave the cashier 11 twenty-dollar bills. How much change did Sarah receive? Thanks!
Where can I buy wildflower plants or seeds? Or any plant with green flowers? I'm especially interested in bluets: English daisies (bellis perennis)--not the cultivated ones that I've seen in some catalogs and garden centers, but the little wild ones that grow in the grass in England and France; and white and yellow violets--not the violas that one mail order garden center sold me as violets. As for green flowers, I have some but am interested in any except (at present) hydrangeas, which grow too big for my garden. I don't have much luck with getting "viridifloral" plants to come back after the first year.
What is the thesis of this essay based on this introduction? The word “addiction” is often used loosely and wryly in conversation. People will refer to themselves as “mystery book addicts” or “cookie addicts.” E. B. White writes of his annual surge of interest in gardening. : We are hooked and are making an attempt to kick the habit.” Yet nobody really believes that reading mysteries or ordering seeds by catalogue is serious enough to be compared to an addiction to heroin or alcohol. The word “addiction” is here used jokingly to denote a tendency to overindulge in some pleasurable activity. While people often refer to being “hooked on TV,” it does not fall into the light-hearted category of a pleasurable hobby that people pursue with unusual intensity like comic book collecting or knitting circles but the more serious and destructive addiction.
This is a question for stoners.....? Hey Im 16 and growing my first plant. I have three seeds, and they came from really good weed that my brother gave me :D anyways, can I grow them in one of those AeroGarden things? English name for Cai Xin? Can anyone tell me the English name for the green leafy vegetable I know as cai xin? In fact, someone could link me to a web photo catalog showing the many varieties of vegetables sold in food markets in China, that would be greatly appreciated! (For example, another veggie I don't know the name for in English is buo luo, as in "buo luo gao" and the root vegetable that is like a sweet potato that has little hairs on the outside.) If you know where I could purchase legally imported seeds in the USA, so that I can grow these in my back yard garden, that would be great too! I don't live anywhere near a Chinatown, so I know I'll never be able to get them in my local market. Thank all of you for your answers so far! The vegetable I am thinking of is the choy sum, Chinese Flowering Cabbage (which I could tell from the picture), though I've seen the other one as well. I'm fascinated that there are sooo many greens in the market to choose from. I did find some in a specialty oriental shop the other night and cooked them the cantonese way -- yum!
