Garden Plants? My son lives in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire. His birthday is next month and he has asked me to take him to a local garden centre and buy him some plants to stock his ragged garden. The garden is east facing (so sunny, but also not that warm), he doesn't know what soil he has (acid, alkaline, chalky, etc) and i need to find some easy, low-maintenance plants for him, but also something with a bit of colour. I am compiling a list from the huge RHS book, but can anyone help me make that list a bit longer? Also, if i can't get them from a garden centre, what is a good website to order from? Thank you all SO much for responding to this question. I have extended it for 4 days. Have made a long list, and also tried to email all respondents. Am very grateful. Bless you all. Barry.

Any ideas of what it could be? I'm thinking insect or bird. Also how to do stop it going forward? Thank you (Also the plants were not uprooted)

Are you breaking up your perennial garden/plants in the Central Connecticut area? I would be very interested in providing a good home for your Hostas, Black-eyed Susans, Cannas, etc. At 56 have worked too hard and have not spent enough time 'smelling the roses". About 3 years ago I had reason to slow down and was "bitten" by the gardening bug and have developed a deep passion for it. . I am on a mission to populate my new garden with beautiful plants and flowers without going broke and before a progressive and ultimately disabling neurological illlness makes it difficult if not impossible.

how hard is it to grow garden plants on a previous year field? A friend has a field that they are not renting out to farmers this year and has offered me a corner of it to plant a garden. It was a canola field last year and was sprayed with pesticides and herbacides. I was thinking of just putting in some organic compost to the make the dirt work nicely for me. Would there be too much pesticide and stuff in the dirt still to grow my garden there?

Does a high UV index cause garden vegetable plants not to grow as well? My garden vegetables plants are not growing well this summer. I have tomatoes, squash, hot peppers, basil and oregano. The plants are very short and less developed as compared with other summers. I'm wondering if it could be the high UV index we've been having. It's also been cooler than usual and much rainier than usual. The soil is fresh and all else seems to be in order. Should I move them into the shade or it more likely that it's the cooler temperatures and too much rain that's the cause of their underdevelopment? Many thanks.
What common garden plants can be used in an ornamental fish pond? I've discovered that Creeping Jenny and Peppermint do well in my pond. How do I stop my puppy from digging up garden plants? My puppy is a Border Collie x Kelpie and she is about 10 months old now. She's been digging up my father's small fruit plants and he's getting really annoyed and wants to give my puppy away because of the trouble caused. She lives in our backyard most of the time and sleeps inside. We try to walk her as much as possible, usually 2-3 times a day. Is there any way to stop this behaviour? Please help!
Is there any way to neutralize the effect of black walnuts on surrounding garden plants? One of our neighbors has a black walnut tree in his yard. the nuts fall into our garden... the roots are likely traveling under it too. It seems that no matter how much I adjust the soil with compost and rotted manure nothing much wants to grow there. It is unfortunate as that is the best place in our yard for a garden. I think I may have to lay down a plastic sheet, build up a raised bed on top of it, and put a net overhead to block the falling nuts and roots of that black walnut tree. Any other suggestions?
Oriental Garden Plants? I'm looking to create an oriental 'feature' in my garden around my flowering cherry tree, and i'm wondering what type of plants could I get that are oriental. Does fluoride in tap water effect garden plants? Since the city added flouride to our city water supply, my tomato plants and avacado tree are not producing the fruit they have in years past. Same with other people I know in my San Diego community. I am totally on city water, no cistern available. I was thinking if fluoride can be harmfull to humans, why not plants. San Diego County added fluoride to our water supply. Amount is unknown.
what wound be my best choice of garden plants? I want to start a garden in the spring infront of my south facing living room window. There is a tree on my front lawn, but it is still not all that big. I figure it to be about 2 story's high at the moment but I don't yet know what kind it is. I don't have a lot of money to work with, but I would like my place to look nice, I miss my garden since we moved here. I left a garden full of alysum and the name if the other flower has slipped my mind right now, it has pea sized white seeds and the flowers were yellow, orange and orange-red. It was also crawling. Anyway we moved the end of July to a townhouse with garden space in front, but nothing in it, except my recycle and compost bins right now. I had the idea to put in some spikes, probably either 1 big one in the middle or 1 on each end. If the one I have now survives through this currently snowless winter, I will use it in the garden. I am not sure what flowers to use in this garden though. I like calendulas and dwarf buddies. I am in Southern Ontario, so nothing tropical will work. I was just looking at a plant hardiness map on botany.com and my area is 5a, 5b or 6a. They are all close in colour as far as I can tell. The other plant was nasturtium and it looked like it was growing wild in my shade garden. My garden at that house was 100% north facing as was the house so it really only got the morning sun for a couple hours. The alysum never did very well in with the nasturtium in the shade, I think it got crowded out. I picked off a bunch of seeds and threw them back in the day before we moved from there, so I think the new tennants in that house are going to have a nice garden next summer. Also for digitalis, Ontario is in Canada. We are having a very mild winter so far, no snow yet, so I really have no idea what to expect for spring and summer this year. Even hotter than last year probably, I better buy a second garden hose to keep up with my garden's thirst. I am also worried that there is a downspout right at the end of my garden, it killed that part of my garden last year so I am not sure how to avoid this problem this year. I want to raise the garden bed somewhere between 6" & 1'. I want to raise it so I can see it from my living room and also so I have more room to add better soil, the ground seems pretty unforgiving right now, I barely saw weeds grow there in the summer. I plan to add drift wood to the corners of my front yard, it is a small yard, maybe chip out some holes and put in chicks and hens, and something simple and fairly short in front of that. I am debating weather to put anything around the base of the tree or maybe just a small ring of mulch. I have RBG size dreams on balcony box size money. I also plan to have a few puts of veggies in the back yard, I want to keep them in buckets as the backyard is fairly shady because there are bigger trees behind my small backyard. I live in low income housing so I don't get a lot of room to be creative outside and my cats will eat anything I bring inside. I just want the place to look nice and be comfortable here. I grew up in an apartment, now my own family, we live in a townhouse. My mom always had many many plants around, and still does. There is only 1 rood in the apt that doesn't have any plants in it and that is the bathroom. I love having plants around and I want to hopefully pass that love of plants and gardening on to our son and any other children we have in the future. I actually want to speak to management of this complex and see if there is room somewhere on the property to make a community garden, just for the complex. I am sure there would be a lot of interest with my neighbors.

Is your garden brimming with plants ? and do you find it hard to give some away even if you have 100 of the one plant ? My garden is over-crowded, although its small. The plants could grow better if they were spaced out well and if the trees were not scattered along the herbaceous borders. Its not like I can chop the trees down but what can I do with this.
garden plants. my bedding has been filled with sivved topsoil. this is fine i think but? the soil is very compact all the way down to 4 foot. when planting my bulbs i loosened the topsoil. they have come through now but are very very slowly growing. My question is, am i being impacient or are they growing slowly because of the time it takes the roots to grow through the compact soil below?????? thanks for your answer, does the compaction of the soil affect the growing rate or should it not matter wether the soil is fine and loose. thats my question, sorry if i put it the wrong way.
